Hi everyone,
I was wondering what your thoughts are on professional grade (salon) brands of shampoo and conditioner?
In a post Jeffrey made below, he mentioned Nexus produts, high end products available in salons. I checked in a number of salons this AM, and unfortunately, there is no longer a distributer for Nexus products in Nova Scotia. (there used to be, apparently)
What I ended up buying were Nioxin products, specifically designed to clean the scalp and remove toxins such as DHT and stimulate hair growth. Although close to 5 times as expensive as regular shampoos and conditioners, apparently a little goes a long way, so less is needed for each washing.
Any thoughts as to whether these are worth it would be greatly appreciated, am I wasting my money?
Thanks,
David
Can't say I've ever tried them myself, but there seems to be a lot of hype over them. Ever tried looking on the net for cheaper prices?
Hi Shelia,
Nexxus products are exactly the products I was hoping to get, unfortunately they are not available here.
You mentioned a website in your post, but I cannot see it in your message.
David
I did type it in but when I checked back it was not there. This site doesn't carry Nexxus but NaturallyCurly.com carries some really awesome products for thirsty hair.
Hi there, David.
I was hoping that you would see the post below. I believe that the Nexus products are far superior to the average product. I have some serious problems with tangles and dry hair and the Nexus line of products really helps. It isn't 100%, but they work better than anything that I have tried thus far. I use Nexus hair thickening shampoo and Humectress ultimate moisturizing conditioner. The Humectress conditioner is the single best product that I have found for my hair. My hair looks better when I blow dry, so I also use Nexus heat protex. When I use these products and I go out for the evening I always get compliments as my hair looks very shiny and healthy. For example; it was rather warm today and my hair got a little sweaty, however the tangles are not very bad and I can carefully "finger comb" them out. Then I can use a brush, or wide tooth comb. Without the Nexus products I could not do this and I would have a lot of work on my hands. The Infusium leave in conditioner is good too. And yes, a small amount of these products will go a long way, so I think that they are worth the price. I do hope you get a chance to try these products as I really do think that you would like them. If you blow dry the heat protex is in a word, awesome.
Jeffrey.
Thanks Jeffrey!
It was actually your post that got me started on the hunt today (I had the day off today, as I do every 2nd Monday) I checked out first the grocery/drug stores, then the salons. Finally, I found a salon that used to carry Nexxus, but they told me there is no longer a distributor in Nova Scotia and that they are no longer available here. Do you think it's worthwhile buying them online?
I ended up buying Nioxin products, do you have any take on those? (They are supposed to remove harmful compounds, including DHT, from the scalp, and also stimulate hair growth)
A did find the exact Infusium 23 product you mentioned easily at Wal-Mart, it was not even that expensive.

Hi there, David.
David, you are a smart man, a chemist at that. You know what Dr. Rassman would say about Nioxin as an anti-DHT agent. They make claims, but do they have the hard science to back it up? I doubt it. Nioxin makes good products, but there is only one drug that really hammers DHT and another to a lesser degree. The first is Avodart and the other is Propecia and Rassman knows that even if he won't endorse the drug.
Our Wal-Mart stores have begun carrying an extensive line of Nexus products as they have become very popular around here. Perhaps your local Wal-Mart could order some for you. I do think that it would be worth it and it may catch on up there. Nevertheless, Nioxin products are good and I still have some, but the Nexus products are better. Please, do not rely on Nioxin products to help with MPB, because they won't. I've already been down that road.
For all we know, cow dung may (reduce/wash away) DHT better than Nioxin, but the Nioxin certainly would smell better. lol.
Jeffrey.
I've been on Propecia for 15 years+ with no noticeable side effects.
Without it, I believe I would have lost MUCH more hair than I have.
How many folks here are on Propecia or Rogaine (the juice)?
You can get Proscar on-line (same as Propecia) in 5mg tabs and split them in quarters.
Very cheap. About $80.00 per year. Some folks only take it every other day.
I've been doing that for about a year now with no problems.
Peace.
Hi there.
I took Propecia for one year and then switched to Avodart. I have been on Avodart for about 2 years. I just felt that Avodart might work somewhat better. Thus far my hair has been holding really well and has gotten a bit thicker, as it was getting a little thin at the crown. I also use Rogaine, but I only use it before I go to bed. I have had no ill side FX while on Avodart. Actually, I have had a couple of good side FX while on Avodart, such as increased libido and increased muscle mass. I suppose this is due to the increased testosterone. Testosterone usually increases by about 20% over baseline.
Jeffrey.
Hi Jeffrey,
I am still on propecia with no intention to stop, that is my main battle weapon against MPB right now. I did not actually buy Nioxin products to deal with the MPB per se, I was actually buying them because they appeared to be good products to clean/stimulate the scalp, and I was hoping to get a more full effect for my hair (My hair does seem to have more volume after washing with them, but it also seems a bit dryer as well). I just felt it might be better than using run of the mill products, perhaps if you thought Nioxin was no better than your run of the mill Pantene, Suave, Garnier Fructis, Aussie products, etc., I should save my money.
I checked my Wal-Mart for supply of Nexxus products (they actually have a very good stock of HC products), but they did not have any. I don't believe they do special orders but I could try. Perhaps the web is the only way to get Nexxus. (I was wondering, also, do they reduce the tangles in your hair so well that there are no tangles after sleeping? This is when my tangles are worst, my hair always looks looks fairly decent in the early evening after washing, but badly tangled in the AM when I wake up)
Also, what do you do with your hair at night to reduce bedhead? Is it thick enough to braid, or do you just wear it down at night?
Thanks Jeffrey,
David
I do feel that Nioxin is better than the average product and the scalp therapy makes my scalp feel good. I just got up and am getting ready to wash my hair and leave for a few days. I have very few tangles right now and the tangles that I do have will be easy to get out. That is the thing that I really like about Nexus products. I think Nexus would be worth ordering online if that is your only available option. If you do, please let us know how it goes. I hear a lot of people in this group talk about breakage, tangles, etc, and I think Nexus would really help with their issues.
Well, I better get going.
Take care.
Jeffrey.
In a word, no. Salon products are no better or worse than the rest of the product lines out there. I hate to keep repeating this but this is another example of someone needing good information on hair care products. Get Paula Begoun's Don't Go Shopping For Hair Care Products Without Me. It was around $21 U.S. but it has paid for itself in helping me avoid buying junk.
I think those expensive salon products are mostly hype.
I've never found one to be any better than what you can buy at good old Wal-Mart. Pantene and Aussie make products just as good (if not better) as those salon lines...
For example, Suave makes an excellent copy-cat of Nexus' Therape line. There's a description of it at Drugstore.com.
For a more natural approach to improving hair growth, you might want to look into the herb Rosemary. It's been shown to aid in the regrowth of hair. People make strong "teas" and apply it to their scalp or add it (in essential oil form) to jojoba and use it for scalp massage. Might be worth a try. =o)
Thanks DeeDee!
I picked up the shampoo and conditioner from my local Wal-Mart today and plan to try them out. I have to say I was amazed at how reasonable in price they are, it will be interesting to see how they work!
Thanks again,
David
