How long do your bangs have to be before it's not considered a "mullet." I mean no offense to anyone currently wearing that hairstyle, but it's something I wish to avoid. About three months ago I got the back of my hair trimmed. Now it's maybe a quarter inch to half an inch up from my collar, and I can put my bangs in my mouth.
Also...
For users who didn't do much in terms of maintenance cuts, how did you guys deal with the "mulletish" look, since if you don't cut the back at all, it's inevitable.
I´m going mullet-style all the way! Boo-yaa! :)
Anyways, I might shorten the hair in the back just a little when my bangs start to reach my mouth. It kind of depends on how much mulletlike it looks.
I had the back trimmed shorter (maybe to 1-inch length) around 4 1/2 months in and that seemed to help a bit. A lot of guys will just grin and bear it and this will lead to natural layering, which looks better, IMO. Just don't get into the habit of maintenance trims every few months.

Why is it assumed that the "mulletish look" is inevitable? All the hair on your head will grow at the same rate, it's just that the hair at the base of your head is lower, not longer!
This is my progress with zero trims from your basic run of the mill haircut. Unless I'm blind to it, I don't think I had the "mulletish look".

That's a great set of progress pictures, Bruce. You should set up a website like Jason, James, or João. It's always great to see hair history sites that document one's progress from very short to very long, I assume you have a fair number of hair growth pictures. (I assume your goal is somewhere between mid-back and waist)

Thanks David,
Yes, I have a fair number of pics and if I had more time, I would do something like that. I hope I got my point across that you don't have to trim to grow your hair, everything works out in the end. Don't worry, be happy!

I was actually worried about this myself when I started growing my hair out. While I'm still in the midst of the ackward stage, I have had no matience cuts or trims for nearly 8 months. And so far, my hair doesn't look mullet-ish at all. Your hair should grow out fine, without looking anything like a mullet.
The last time I had long hair, it was a mullet that would have made Billy Ray Cyrus proud. It was the textbook "business in the front, party in the back" cut. I regularly got the front cut so the bangs never got longer than my eyebrows. I was introduced to this style by a hot hairstylist in a truckstop in Indianapolis. She said she liked the short in front, long in back style. I'm enough of a guy that I said, "OK!" It was worth it to have her straddling my leg as she cut. I kept going back to her for trims. She could have given me a mohawk and I wouldn't have cared! When I quit driving over the road, and found out that this style had the horrible name "mullet",I got my hair cut off and donated the 14" ponytail to LOL (if only I'd have known!).
As far as hair looking like a mullet, I don't think it's a mullet if the bangs reach below your nose, IMHO. I've done a mullet, so I know what they look like and how to avoid it (ban scissors!).

So Lon,
What would it take to see one of your mullet pictures? Would a healthy beg do the trick?

I've been growing my hair from a buzz for almost 2 years with no trims. I definitely went through the mullet phase (as you can see above) but I just rolled with it. It didn't bother me. I knew it wouldn't last forever and I just kept my goal of "naturally flowing long hair" in mind. I got through it, no sweat. The picture shows me at 8 months dead asleep on the couch in the middle of the night with the cat...ha ha! It was the only picture I could find that really showed the mulletness.
Great picture! One of my cats likes to lay on my head too...and has even tried to groom my hair a few times.
