Have been growing my hair from shaved head six months. Everybody has suggested I trim it. Didn't think I should. Glad to read here not to. Have been greasing it down to keep it under control at work. I am an older guy. My hair is only down to the bridge of my nose. Thought I would only ever have a shaved head but am really enjoying for the first time long hair - have had it this long before - but am going for a ponytail or something, not sure, but long.
A little trimming later might help. I had my hair at the back cut a little bit so that the front would catch up with them in time. Trimming will also help get rid of split ends. I think it is a good idea because if you let split ends unattended they can reach to the full length of the strand of hair (that is what my hair dresser told me).
A great line to drum up business! I was told that, too, and it never happened. I'm glad I walked out the door, rather than letting the man cut. What others have said on here, and what is in line with my personal experience, is that one side of a split will soon break off and then the other will. The split will not travel upward into the area above where the strand is newer and healthier.
If you take care of your hair, at the young age the strands are during the awkward stage, you should not have split ends anyway. If you have not been taking care of your hair and you have split ends that soon, once you begin proper care the splits you have will soon break off and you'll have none.
There are a few "old wives tales" out there repetitively spread by those who would profit from us by trimming us unnecessarily. The same ones crop up so often and from such far distant quarters that they surely are spread among those in the profession of haircutting. Among the myths I've heard several times are:
Hair will grow faster if you trim it when there is a full moon.Hair will grow faster if you trim it regularly.Hair will grow longer if you trim off split ends. And yes, the line that split ends will travel all the way up to your roots and make you bald.

I also haven't had any trouble at all with split ends, and don't get any trims. I do apply extra conditioner to the ends, towel dry my hair till its partly damp, then blow dry without drying it all the way out to the ends.

PS Victor, I tried to have quotes in the subject line:
"Trim for split ends" is bogus
was the original subject. The board software sent back my message with an empty subject line and complained that I had not put in a subject. Looks like quotes throw it off.
Well not everyone get's split ends. It can just be the nature of the hair or sun/chemical/heat damage which causes the damage. Regardless the best cure is to cut past where the breakage starts. Otherwise there will be uneven breakage and the hair will look uneven.
I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. I've been growing my hair out for seven months from a short haircut, and I recently got it trimmed two weeks ago. I found a sympathetic hair stylist and got a good trim. I communicated to him that I was growing my hair out. I'll keep seeing the same person every month or so, that way I'm not playing hit and miss. Make sure you're comfortable with whoever cuts your hair.
