I am 35 and have had long hair since I was 21. I used to have dreams of cutting my hair and regreting it. I havent had one in sometime. I have been thinking more and more of cutting it for comfort and convienience reasons. I know if I regret it, I can grow it back. My hair is about 15 inches long and very healthy. How much are wigmakers paying for hair that long?
Grant
Grant,
How long is your hair now?
You thought of cutting it "for comfort and convenience reasons." I understand the convenience - long hair does take a while to wash & dry, has to be pulled back when it's hot, etc. - but how is it uncomfortable? Are you in a town with a really hot summer?
My suggestions: wait two weeks; if you didn't have any doubts about cutting it, then trim about 3", and wait another couple of weeks to find out if you missed it! Don't cut it all off at once, the huge change to your scalp might give you a really bad headache. At least it did for me when I was dumb enough to do that - not that it would necessarily be dumb for you to have short hair, just that my reasons at the time were dumb.

It is to the middle of my back, about 15". Yes, average temp this last week has been 104F. Its a dry heat.
Grant,

That sounds brutal - I'd move! :-) I realize "just moving" isn't always an option... You could also ship some of your surplus heat to Oregon, rainy and 65F today without any trace of blue behind the clouds or of that big yellow thing I hear people talking about.
Have you tried a variety of ways of putting it back - elastic bands, barrettes, French or regular braiding, "claw" clips? Maybe a few new styles could help you survive the heat wave. If you do really need to cut it off, I'd still suggest just trimming a few inches at a time with a couple of weeks between.

I have no idea what wig makers are paying for hair (I doubt it's very much, since they get it very cheaply in the Orient), but I do know that Locks of Love takes donations of hair 10 inches or longer. They make wigs for children who have lost their hair due to medical reasons. What better way to go for a change you have been thinking about? The website is www.locksoflove.com or www.locksoflove.org
There are many salons who offer free styling if you decide to cut your hair, depending what city you live in. All the information is on their website. Good luck with your decision!
Grant,
I agree that you should follow the 2 week rule. Wait 2 weeks and if in the time frame, you have in doubts don't cut it. Wait another 2 weeks and if you have doubts, dont cut again. If you do decide to cut it, only cut a litte at first. Then wait and see if you regret it. I was considering cutting mine short last year and I would have regretted it! I was fortune to cut off about 6 inches at first. This put my hair just below my shoulders. I regretted it instantly! Like you, I have had long hair since I was 21 and I am now 33. My hair is middle back now. Take your time with this decision. Hair grows back but it takes a long time!
Good Luck,
Darrin
I am 44 and have had long hair at one time or another since I was about 14. I have cut it many times since then. I usually get it cut really short when I do. IT WILL ALWAYS GROW BACK. (at least mine always has:). Of course you have to go through that awkward stage again. but it always comes back. Mine is about mid back now and I'm not plannin on cuttin anytime soon.
Trust your feelings grasshopper ;))
and if you can get some cash for it so much the better
Hair is bought by the weight. It needs to be at least 8 inches to be useful in wigmaking. It also has to be cut to where you know without a doubt which end the root is. Putting it in a ponytail and cutting it off still bound is the best way. If your hair is thick, do several ponytails.
I am a wigmaker and on the rare occasion I buy hair, I pay about $25 an ounce for good european hair that is healthy and has no chemical damage. Depending on how long and how thick, I have paid as much as $250 for a head of hair. Some folks pay more for fetish purposes. Retailer mark it up for resale, so I do not know what they pay. But depending on where, it may SELL for 30-60 dollars an ounce. Keep in mind, vendors aren't buying the sentimental value.
Make sure you are ready to cut. Two week rule is a good rule.
Good Luck
