Hey everyone, me again. Just thought I'd pop by and say "hi." It's been almost 44 months since I started growing my hair! You will be seeing some recent pictures soon.
I've had only two trims so far, the last one being almost two years ago. Most of my hair looks great, but there are a few (not many) split ends. My hair is a bit uneven, and thinner towards the ends. I hate to give up length, and don't want to waste time and money if not necessary. But, having my hair at a more even length would be nice, though it grows very slowly (18" after 44 months and two trims).
So, to trim or not to trim, that is the question...
Well, if the splits are so few it wouldn't be so critical, I guess. However, you want more length which would be better if the ends are in a good condition. Again, it's your choice, and since your hair grows slow maybe you should wait a few more months to see how it's going. Besides, a trim of 1 inch maximum won't be such a loss.
Yeah, 1" wouldn't be a big loss with 18" already, but it would take about three months to grow back (at the rate my hair grows). I think two years without a trim and just negligible split ends/damage is pretty good. Definitely got my money's worth out of my last trim! I just don't want to push my luck and see more split ends appear and cause longer lengths of hair to be damaged. A few hairs look a bit frizzy (maybe the beginnings of split ends?) though most hair still seems to look OK.
A good hair salon near me, that did the last trim, now charges $40. I could go to a cheaper family hair place and pay about $15, though I'm not sure if the quality would be as good. I was very happy with the upscale salon last time, just not the price! ;)
40 or 15 dollars? That's insane. Here, you can have a trim for 3 dollars, or slightly more for the longhairs. But with such prices, I'd definitely boycott them.
Also, you may ask someone to make the trim to you. It should be simplier than for a short haired person, just keep the cut straight and it should be OK. With the long hair and some amateur barber, there's a good thing that you have the scissors always far away of your ears :)
Yes, the difference in price is incredible, although if it means having someone competent that will do a good job, then it's worth it. We can't put the hair back if too much is cut off! ;) I'm not sure I have anyone I can trust to do the trim for me for free.
If its not too many, just get yourself a pair of small scissors and cut each one right above the split. Takes a while, but you can never spend too much time with your hair LOL!

Yeah, I thought of that, but I don't want to miss any split ends. Plus, it would be nice to even out my hair, as long as I don't have to lose too much length.
It really is your call, but based on what you have said I can only say for myself what I would do:
1. Have those Split-Ends targeted and cut just above the split right away.
2. Have a "Dusting of a trim." In other words just a 1/2" or so taken off the ends.
BE CAREFUL WHO DOES THIS.
Good luck to you in your final decision.
That sounds like a good idea. I would trust the upscale salon, but they are $40 plus tip and tax. I could go to a family hair place that friends recommend, but run the risk of having my hair messed up, and it can't be put back on. Maybe I'll just bit the bullet and go to the upscale salon. They did a great job last time I went, about two years ago.
