Can someone teach some of us old farts what some of the IM abbreviations mean? I know lol and btw, dah, but I'm baffled at LMAO, and what is :D? Is :P peace? I'm so confused!
Bruce
LMAO is Laughing my a** off
ROFL= rolling on the floor laughing
LOL= laughing out loud
LMAO= laughing my a.s.s off
BTW=by the way
ROFG= Rolling on the floor giggling
LMFAO= laughing my **** a** off
LMAOATWTTB= Laughing my a.s.s off all the way to the bank
Lmao means laugh my arse off and those two things you did are smilies. :D is a happy face and :P is a smiley face poking its tongue out(look at it with your head to the side)
A few more for you
Rofl= roll on the floor laughing
imo = In my opinion
brb = be right back
I can't think of anymore but this should help you :P <<< i used one there.
I think I can help you out.
LMAO = laughing my ass off
ROFL = rolling on floor laughing (can also been ROTFL)
ROTFLMAO = a combination of the two above
=)<<< A happy face. I use this one a lot.
WTF <<< Well, most people know what this means..hahaha
Those are just a few basic ones, but there are seriously loads of things like this. My friends and I use these along with some of the more obscure/crazy ones like WTFBBQSAUCE and other strange variations of LOL such as LOOOOL or LAWL.
Yeah, my friends and I basically act like idiots online...we even made up a few things for ourselves, which nobody could possibly understand except us.

I think I have a problem. I got everything you said.
Another step along the pathway from redneck to nerd!
Big George
.
Hey, don't blame us! It's just a natural progression from the IMOs, IIRCs and AFAIKs of the '80s and '90s, IMHO, of course [grin].

IM abbreviations aren't a different language. In fact, it's mostly a joke these days, except for the really common ones:
lol (or lmao, or rofl)
brb
btw
wtf
These are the only ones anyone uses seriously anymore. If you see a "list" of IM abbreviations, no one actually uses them. Of course, a lot of people (including me) joke around with them, saying facetious, pointless stuff like:
lawls
roffle
OMGWTFBBQSAUCE
LMAO--frm 1 ol frt 2 nother!!
I have to refer to it often. lol
IM Abbreviations
I just made that into a bookmark!
Mouse
LMAO is Laughing My Ass Off
Some other ones are:
ROFL - Rolling on the floor laughing
LMFAO - Lauging my f- ass off
Yeah that's about all that I can think of right now
-Mihnea
look AT it sideways ** My mistake haha.
Hope this helped.
Now I understand. BTW TFF!! LMFAO!!!
Bruce :D
What does IM mean Bruce?
"Oh Homey, you can be so 'blue -rinse' "
"Doh!"
Here's a pretty extensive catch-all list if you encounter anything new:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Internet_slang
If that fails, www.urbandictionary.com contains every stupid word and acronym everyone that has ever existed has made up.
As some others have said, they really aren't used seriously that much anymore. In certain contexts they are very common (on-line games: hf = have fun, gl = good luck, gg = good game) or if you are typing something into a cell phone and it actually makes sense to save yourself the effort of not spelling before and just hitting b4. Anyone thats posting their own blog though, or posting on a public forum, should and hopefully does type as they would speak. I'm 22 and I grew out of the whole thing years ago. Anyone that wants to be taken seriously generally types as intelligently as they can. The primary use for them now (ZOMGWTFBBQ) is to mock the whole concept.
Any other gibberish is probably supposed to be an emoticon, like:
<@B-Þ
which can be interpreted as: clown hat, curly hair, sunglasses, nose, mouth with tongue sticking out.
What emotion exactly is intented by this is beyond me, but suffice it to say that anything that doesn't make sense immediately is probably insignificant enough to ignore.
Great post, Bruce!
I'm glad you brought this question up and had some of those more versed in internet slang really explain what all those terms mean. I also have to thank DeeDee for that link, that would be a good one to bookmark, to help me get up to speed!

Tthe only thing you really need to know when using the internet is when & how to use Google. Simply try this:
