Just started trying this and though it's only been a few days so far just wanted to post some results - I've been washing everyday using only conditioner (pantene) and I'm really happy with the results (normally I wash every other day using anti-dandruff shampoo and conditioner). So far my hair seems to have the best "consistency" - not too dry and airy (and in my face), as it is the day after I wash normally, even using conditioner - and not too oily, as it gets after 2-3 days without washing.
I'm really surprised it's been working as my scalp produces a lot of oil and my hair gets very oily w/o washing after only 3 days on average. Also, I figured my dandruff would be a problem - but, so far it's only been a little bit itchier at times, much much less than I would experience if I shampooed using a non-dandruff shampoo even once.
So, I recommend you guys try this, at least for a week or so, and see what it looks like, maybe post some before/after pics would be cool.
I'm happy it works for you. It didn't for me lol. Be careful with those anti-dandruff shampoos most are pretty harsh on the hair.
And don't worry, you don't have oily hair, it's average to get oily after 3 days. Mine gets oily in 12 hours (that's too oily)!
Your hair may be gettig to dried out because of the anti-dandruff shampoo (but if you think it doesn't cause any damage and it helps solve your problem go with it).
Thats great Dave!
I tried this once but it caused too much buildup. I couldn't resist and ended up shampooing...:-(
Be careful with this. I don't shampoo my hair at all; I'm basically on the conditioner-only method for life (or, until it stops being kind to me). However, I make sure not to use hair products that contain silicones, and to ensure that any silicones that may've slipped through are eradicated, I clarify my hair once every week and a half to two weeks.
This brings up my main point - it's great to not shampoo every day, whether you're on a shampoo method or not, and conditioner-only washes are particularly beneficial for curlier hair, but you can't just randomly stop shampooing if you're using something silicone-ridden like Pantene. You could probably go a week or even more without shampooing depending on how curly your hair is if you're using something like Pantene, but ensure that you shampoo thoroughly after.
Oh, and if you're wondering why I don't use shampoo, it's because it dries out hair, which is really bad for hair as curly as mine, as curly hair is naturally dryer than straight hair. So, the conditioner-only method is pretty useful for people like me.
Hope that helps.
Peace
Hi - I've heard silicones mentioned once before but don't know much about them. Why do you say it's bad for me to stop shampooing "cold turkey" and only stick with conditioners - do silicones build up in your hair over time or something? Is that why you recommend shampooing once a week or so when using a conditioner w/ silicones?
Also, I have straight hair.
Thanks
See my post below under Pantene Pro V Time Renewal. Silicone compounds are harmless and found in the vast majority of hair care products. The idea that they somehow "dry out" or damage hair has no scientific support. I don't now how this got started but people accept it at face value and spread it around. Of course any conditioning product whether it is shampoo, conditioner, a 2 in 1, leave-in, what have you, will build up over time. Any function that alters hair behavior and protects it (which is what you want, right?) is going to, by necessity, involve depositing some sort of coating on your hair. That's why every week or so, you have to use a clarifying shampoo to remove all the deposits without leaving anything else in the process.
