Hey brothers: We took our 5th graders to D.C. this week and the Congressional "Page" who took us around had long hair. He was a junior in college and his hair was several inches below his shoulders in back and below his chin on the sides. It wasn't quite as long as mine though(lol! We were waiting outside and the wind was blowing and our hair was flowing. He had a suit and jacket with a tie like all the other guides but defineately STOOD out from the other men in the building with "conservative" haircuts. I wished I had had the chance to talk with him about his choice to wear it long esp. in that environment. Another cool thing was that my students sometimes kid me about my long hair and to see this young guy at our Nation's Capital also with long hair was at the very least an example that men with longhair exist in all walks of life/professions/settings etc. In our 2 day trip I saw other longhairs. One of our parent chaperones had a braid past mid back. I complimented him on it and we talked awhile about our hair. About a year ago he cut the top and sides short (kinda like a mullet) and told me he really regretted it and is growing it out. I wore my hair down most of the trip accept for one night at dinner when I put it in a ponytail. There were over 100 adults and students on this outing; many of whom (adults) I had never met. I was "concious" of my long hair but not "self-concious" as I've been in the past. On the contrary, I was really diggin' it! Anyway, looks like LONGHAIRS LIVE at our (my) Nation's Capital too! So there is hope after all... I plan on getting into government work down the road (hopefully State Dept.), so it's good to know that one can work in the Federal bureaucracy and still have long hair. Phew... lol! =)

Lots of civil servants have long hair. Private employers are more likely to be a problem.
