Yesterday, while doing a "seek & destroy" on my hair for split ends, I noticed a few (about... 4 or 5) hairs in my bangs that had these little bulb looking things close to the ends.
They weren't at the very tip of the end, but close to it. after gently pulling on them, the very top piece after the "bulb" broke off, leaving a tiny split end.
I don't know exactly what caused them, but since these little damaged hair follicles were only found in my bangs, and there were only a few, I'm guessing that they are due to the little metal piece in my hair tie. That would explain why they were close to the ends (since I only reached the point of tying all of my hair into a ponytail a few months ago, and the bangs only clear the hairtie by about an inch and a half).
If it's relevant, I use Herbal Essences shampoo and Suave conditioner, and wash my hair about twice a week.
Anyone else have this problem?
Thanks!

lol!!yeah,I have that problem too.those light bulb thingies develop into splits later on.I have plenty of those.and I also have splits not originating at the end.nasty stuff...the only thing i do is to snip em off.I'm putting off a trim for as long as I can!!hope this helps
It's a good thing you asked, because I've been wondering for a long time what they are. I get quite a few at the lowest layer of my hair for some reason...
Thanks man, if it weren't for you I wouldn't have been able to find/stop them, since I got the idea of seek and destroy from you.

Hhmm, interesting. I only ever used the hairties with the metal bits in them for a little while. For most of the time I've had my hair long, I've used what I call "welded" hairbands... the Scunci people refer to them as "Ouchless", I think. Basically instead of a metal crimp, the ends of the piece of jacketed elastic are welded together. No more metal. I use 'em cause they don't catch as much as the metal things do, but they do have a somewhat higher failure rate (for some reason the rubber often seems to separate inside the weld). Anyway, if you think it's the metal, you could try those. They come in quite serious diameters, too, like 1/4", which I like. More holding force, arrrr! YMMV.
Try finding these. They work well without having any breakage on a metal band. I've used both.
