I've never been sure what a split end looks like. I'm not sure whether I have any or not. My hair is not even close to being considered long, but it's longer than the usual short hair. It's almost over my ears and just starting to get into my eyes.
The sides near the ears flip up and the ends at the bottom of the back of my head flip up. And they're jagged. Pieces of the hair stick up and separate from the other pieces that are sticking up too. Looks almost like a bunch of pointed shards.
I don't get why my hair does this or what to do about it.
It's like when you wear a hat and the wind blows at the exposed hair. You take the hat off and (minus the hat hair) the rest of your head looks okay, but the back is flying all over the place.
Split ends are when an individual hair follicle splits into two at the end, so it looks something like:

Hair like you described is normal for wavy or curly hair, and it will return to normal once it gets longer and it weighs itself down. The best thing to do is wait it out, trimming them will make them go away for about a week or two, then they'll be back. Don't worry, theyll be gone soon!
Keep it growing, hope this helped.

Actually my hair is dead straight and did that quite badly for a long time, but I'm at the 19 month period and it's more or less totally stopped doing that.
