Hey there,
After about 2 years of shaving my hair as short as an electric trimmer with no guard can make it, in addition to about 10 years of keeping my hair short or moderately short, I've decided to try to grow it out again.
See, I didn't have much luck when I last tried. That might be partly because I know so little about hair care. Probably part of the reason I liked it short was because it required so little to maintain. Now, however, I want to grow it out and I'm not quite sure what I need to do. It's been about 6 or 7 weeks since my last shave and I think the length is about two inches? Two-and-a-half? Still pretty short.
My last attempt at growing my hair out was, as I said, about 10 years ago, and didn't yield great results. Soaking wet my hair came down to a couple inches below my chin. However, dry it was a nightmare. It was straight as an arrow but frizzy like mad. Looked like a bird's nest, perhaps because of the insane humidity in Miami. Not only that, but when it was dry the ends flipped out, giving me this weird pseudo-50's female haircut look. Very odd.
So, I'm hoping to get some good advice. I think I need to go in for a trim soon, since the ends are all uneven and crazy. I've done some reading on the forum but I could still use any help I can get.
Thanks. :)
it is far too soon to even consider a trim. The hair HAS TO GROW! And, it has to be allowed to grow for a long long time and allowed to do its own thing.
Your hair will even itself out all by itself and you will arrive as a long hair much quicker.
Trims at where you are now will just keep setting you back and back. The Awkward Stage has to be gone through. Might as well get it all over with starting now and waiting-out the 2 years.
Good luck to you.
Like Justin said it's important not to get trims too soon. And don't give up because it may look messy during the awkward stage! Just be happy it's getting longer every second (even that it would be unnoticed even by a microscope LOL)
Hey man, and welcome!!!!!
First thing to do is avoid haircuts. Second is conditioner, conditioner, and more conditioner.
Happy growing and good luck.

Hey brother; Welcome. Well if it's grown 2 in. in less than 2 months you are WELL above average in growth rate. I agree with the others...no trims, no cuts, for a long long long time. I've suffered with the frizz, humidity, wild hair myself (living in NC) and you just have to get RHINO SKIN and tuff it out! Grow Man Grow. The Bruce'ster
Thanks for the advice. I'm not in any rush to get a trim right now, I just wasn't sure whether or not I should. I'll go ahead and table that idea for now.
My previous post was a bit terse, as I'd been meaning to post on this forum for days to ask and just kept forgetting, getting distacted, until I finally remembered and shot off that post while I was heading out the door to work. Tried to measure the length, it's trickier then I had anticipated. I think it's about 1.5 inches.
Now, someone mentioned conditioner? Anything in particular I should look for? Even when my hair was longer I didn't condition much. I wasn't exaggerating when I said I was really clueless about this stuff. I've seen around here that some folks suggest not using shampoo, or using it sparingly (once a day?) or using a special type.
Thanks again.
Hi, Darren! Thats cool. I am from Miami,Florida too. I know all about the insane humidity down here. Well, The best thing you can do is let your hair grow. Do not go in for regular trims. Once you make it to the 2 year mark, You then decide if you want a trim or not. Regular trims do not make hair grow faster. In fact, I dont think anything speeds up hair growth. Once your hair gets longish(Like around 1 year and a couple of months..sometimes varies depending on the persons genetics!) You might want to shampoo less often and use lots of conditioner to untangle. The longer your hair gets, The less you should shampoo it. Shampooing it too often will only dry it and make it prone to damage. Never brush your hair when wet and if you can, Always let it dry naturally(AIR DRY). If you treat your hair good, The results will be great. Oh and the frizz..I dont think there is much you can do to prevent it. This harsh humid weather tends to make hair frizzy and dry. Good luck!
