SO, I've finally decided, at 18, to grow my hair out. My hair has always been thick and grows pretty quickly, and I've been on the point of having it past my ears several times. However, I've had it cut because when I was in highschool I played football and wrestled. Decided to grow it out for several reasons:
1. As you might guess, long hair + football = hot and sweaty, and in wrestling the refs won't even let you have long hair.
2. I play guitar and sing backup for a local metal band, and I figured what's a good metal band without some long hair?
3. My mom's side is all gray, and my dad's side is all bald, so I figured I'd try something new before either of those happen. You never know, though, some people pull off the gray look well.
I don't have any pics right now, but I'll post some as soon as I can. The back of my hair is just to the knobby bone behond my neck, and on the sides it's a little past my ears. This is the longest it's ever been and feels sort of awkward, since I'm used to having really short hair.
I didn't know much about hair care either >_> I've been lurking at this board for a bit and got some great hair tips, so it looks much nicer and overall healthier. Seeing everyone here just inspired me to not get it cut and just let it grow.
I am glad you decided to grow it. It is not somehting you will regret or something that you should take lightly. You are now embarking on a journey that will take much time and commitment, but one that will give back more then yon could ever imagine.
Happy growing and remember that we are here to help with any questions.

Best of luck with your decision to grow it out.
Depending on what you're starting with, I would aim for around 12 - 18 months (that's what I did, and I got there in the end!)
There'll be times when it will look awful, but remember, if you can stick it out for the first year (even 10 months sometimes is enough) then it WILL get long.
Luke.
don't worry... MPB gene is gotten from your mother's side...
Good, then I'll just be gray then >_>
I don't really have a problem being gray, or bald, but I'd rather be gray than bald.
