I have given up brushing by hair. Even though I always used a good quality boar bristle brush I found that my hair was always prone to tangling - even with the trims I get.
I now just run a wide tooth comb through the ends morning and night and it seems to have helped to eliminate alot of my problems. (I hold my hair above the comb tightly so as to help prevent any pulling or breaking.) I also has started to sleep with my hair inside a collared t-shirt to help prevent me from always getting my hair caught under my arms while sleeping. I put on one shirt and then put on another with my hair inbetween the two shirts. Keeps my hair dry from any normal sweating and prevents any bedhead matting or tangling.
Just thought I'd share these tips with the members as it might work for some who have similiar problems with their mane.

Hey Karsten
Ever try Finger-Combing? That's the only route I use anymore and I believe that EdG does the same always.
Hope you're having a nice weekend.

I do finger comb through the day and just use the wide-tooth comb in the morning when I get up - and at night just before bed. Seems to be working for me. But as my mane gets longer I may have to alter my routine.

WOW, that's interesting, Karsten. I can't imagine giving up on brushing, myself. To me, it's a ritual that is part of the joy of being a longhair. Once I finger-comb all tangles free, I just start with the ends, then work my way up to full, long brush-strokes that go from scalp to tips. It feels so great to stimulate the scalp in that way, and it helps distribute the scalp's natural oils towards the ends... Oh, well, --- to each his own!

I agree Ken, I too loved brushing my hair - but it wasnt' benefical - for whatever reason I am having less of a problem with just using a wide-tooth comb.
Go figure?

I tried a boar bristle brush, but it was too soft to go through my hair. For what it's worth, I completely detangle with the wide-tooth comb, working up from the bottom, of course. I then graduate to an equally wide-tooth brush, when I feel like it.
Note: I'd recommend this only for straight hair. If I want it wavy, I don't brush.
I always, ALWAYS detangle & brush (especially concentrating on the scalp) to loosen dead skin before washing it. And of course we all know to NEVER brush wet hair.
