For those of you who are attempting to grow to terminal length what prompted you to do so? Did you decide you wanted mega length when you first started growing your hair or did you come to that decision somewhere durring the growing process. If the latter at what piont did it dawn on you to continue?
I've been growing my hair for the past 2.5 years because of a film that I've been involved with. For most of that time I have despirately wanted to cut my hair. Then last week I suddenly stopped hating my long hair (it's almost mid back now ) and I've decided since it's already long I may as well try to see how long I can get it to grow.
Hi there,
I don't think I've met you before, so welcome to our community! It's awesome that you have decided to grow to termianl length, you are actually like a good number of us here, once the desire to grow our hair starts, it's hard to stop! It's great that the former hate you had for your long hair has now turned into a desire to grow it as long as possible, a sign you are becoming a long hair at heart.
For myself, I originally had no desire to grow it super long, perhaps mid back or so. After I discovered the MLHH in September of last year, and saw some of the great manes some of the guys here have grown, (e.g. Absalom, Trolleypup, and EdG), the desire to grow my hair as long as possible set in.
As your hair appears to be fast growing, (mid back at 2 1/2 years), there is a good chance you have the genes to grow it super long. Hope you can get some pics up soon.
All the best,
David
I'm not sure really lol..... I think it was because most of the bands i listen to have guys with awesome long manes and i just though it would be cool :D (which it is)
Hi Kailongbeard, I originally wanted to grow to maybe mid back length after getting tired of all those 80s hairstyles that I went through. I started out with a rat tail and just let it grow out without trims, save for an itty bitty one at about the 2 year mark.
My inspiration to grow it even longer came along when a few of the men at my church group had hair a lot longer than mine. One couple had 3 small boys ranging in age from about 5 to 8 years old, all with waist length hair. At that point my goal was to grow to waist length.
Once it got to my waist, I just decided to just let it grow to full length. If you click on my avatar you can see how long it is now. I also have a long beard too.
Since you have been growing your hair for 2 1/2 years, it makes sense to keep it at this point. Although you originally had long hair forced upon you for the sake of doing a movie, it has really become a part of you at this point. Actually, mid back length hair probably requires the least amount of work to maintain. It is pleasingly long, but yet, easy to manage. Waist length and longer hair does require a bit more work to maintain. Since your hair will gradually grow to your waist over the next couple of years, you will slowly adapt to doing that added maintenance and won't even notice. (At least it happened that way for me.)
OTOH short hair requires more maintenance, when you factor in costs. Haircuts are expensive, and a year's worth of them can easily set you back $200.00 or more.
Although not scientifically proven, it is believed that long hair is better for you health. (I think it is a Sikh belief.)
Anyway, best wishes on your journey to terminal length hair, and if you can, please show us some photos of your hair and beard.

Well..My goal is terminal length and i am determined to make it happen. It is very hard for me because my hair is wavy/curly but nonetheless i am letting no obstacles get in my way. I think at the 10th month of growing my hair out i just decided i wanted to let it grow till it stopped. One reason was this board. I was amazed how incredible LONG hair looks!
P.S- I am at the 16th month now
I've had long hair for many years, usually around classic (hip) length. I decided to grow to terminal length in 2004.
It was mostly out of curiosity - what is one's terminal length? I'm concluding that I don't have a well-defined terminal length. The hair just tapers off to nothing, with the longest strands just brushing the top of my calves. I put together a model of hair growth/shedding on my website.
Good luck on your hair growing and welcome!

Hi Kailongbeard,
Well, your questions are easiest answered by briefly telling you my Y2K haircut story...
I first finally succeeded in achieving ponytail-length hair in the summer of '93, around my 40th birthday. I had always wanted long hair (to at least ponytail-length); but never could get it that long when I was younger, due to inability to endure the awkward stages, --- plus lack of support to do so (especially in my teens, when I still lived at home), job dress codes, etc.
Once it finally could all be tied back in a tail, I had no idea how long I would ultimately grow it; but I simply discovered that the longer it grew, the more I liked it!
By '99 my mane was down to my lower back, with early Y2K arriving at waist-length. Then on the 1st day of summer, Y2K, I woke up tired and annoyed at my long hair, and impulsively decided to cut it. Once I fully realized what I had done, I was devestated. But, the good news is that the experience made me COMMIT to being a longhair for life... Up until that haircut, I had always secretly assumed that having long hair was just a "phase" that I needed to go through, --- and that someday I would of course return back to a more "normal" guy's hair length. Little did I realize how much having long hair meant to me, until after it was gone...
It was the immediate decision that came out of the pain and loss of having grown my hair for a total of 9 years, only to see it disappear within minutes, that made me decide to let my mane grow and grow and grow... as looooooong as possible! Plus, once I discovered this board in '03, I additionally felt empowered by the support here, --- as well as first heard the term, "terminal length".
So, there you have it!

Curiosity maybe...I don't think I had a goal of terminal (since I didn't really know about it), I just wanted it longer. I decided on very long lengths fairly early in the process, but not from the beginning.
I never hated my hair...the awkward phase was unpleasant, but I dealt with it OK. Once that was past, I pretty much enjoyed it at all lenghts, although I like it more longer.
And, I am now at terminal, with the longest strands about 42" long, reaching to mid-thigh, with, of course, fairytale ends.
Curiosity about what will happen + lazyness. It's easy to get in a rut and just do the maintenance every day and let whatever happens happen. anything else is a hassle.
Did you decide you wanted mega length when you first started growing your hair or did you come to that decision somewhere durring the growing process.
Later. When I started I didn't know what would happen--i didn't even know at the time I was going to wind up with it long. I took it one day at a time thinking I might bail out at some point but that time never came and I gradually quit thinking about it in terms of a limit type of goal.
If the latter at what piont did it dawn on you to continue?
There was no one eureka moment. I guess if you are lucky to have a life where you don't get hassled by anyone, and you make it through the awkward stage then you eventually arrive at a point where you just get up every day and do whatever routine you follow to fix it up for the day and then you let it happen.
good luck.
