Hi. I've been growing my hair for 7 months (and a bit). I have very dry ends and I heard that having them trimmed can actually promote healthy growth. Has anyone had any experience with this? My hair is very thick (Individial strands are fine though) and slightly curly. I went to a hairdresser who said layering it might also help but I think that I will lose length if I layer.
BTW I'm from South Africa and I am going to be coming back here from now on. So glad I finally found a site that 'understands' LOL.
Thanks
Getting the ends cut will make it shorter. Nothing else. It doesn't strangthen it, it doesn't make it grow faster or healthier so I'd ignore that if I were you.
If he has damaged ends it will make it grow healthier. Not from the root, but the damage will be gone which makes the hair nicer.
Layers aren't the best idea if you want to grow your hair out. most people with long layered hair (at least, maintained, cut layers) are women. Men usually either have natural layers or none at all.
Layering is good if you want it, but beware you'll probably lose a good chunk of hair.
You may want to be careful with a stylist or barber saying that "layering" might help. If you look at some of the posts on here, others have done that and the people layering their hair hack a lot off all in the name of either making it look better (in their opinion) or to try and get rid of split/damanged ends (this is usually done without asking you, once you are in their chair they tend to cut first and ask questions after and by then the damage is done) my advice is to you (even though i'm new at posting on here) is that if you do want to trim a little off the ends, go to someone you can trust, perhaps a stylist that your friends that have long hair go to? If you don't want to cut your hair you just want the ends to look better, try using repair products and hair masks. I've found Redkin to have good products.
Best of luck with your growth!
Danny
Cutting off just the very driest ends can be very helpful not only to keeping the ends even, but the feeling of fresh ends can be very satisfying and allow you to enjoy your new growth more. However, I do *not* recommend layers.
The most important thing is to find a hairstylist that you really can trust, either referred from a very good friend or personal experience. Tell him/her exactly what you want, for example just a half inch off. *Show* him or her exactly how much you want off. You really can't be too careful.
Good luck, whatever you decide.
