Hi. What is the best way to use a flat iron? I only use it on very special occassions... So not going to over-use it. I heard that it can actually seal the hair cuticle if the correct products are used - didn't sound right to me though.
Hi Kyle,
I really and sincerely hope that you use a falt iron sparingly, if at all. I caused a lot of damage and actually affected my growth when I fell into the trap of using these devices too often. I don't really want to get "preachy" or anything, the decision has to be YOURS and YOURS alone. However, a flat iron WILL cause damage to your hair, it does not seal the hair cuticle at all. It is true to some degree that the damage can be minimized by using the iron sparingly, using a top quality iron, and using a product to protect your hair from heat before using it. However, why not simply be content with the hair you have now and let nature do its thing. We are all born differently, and have different hair types. If you want top quality long hair, the best advice I can give is to stay away from irons.
Hope this helps,
David
Hi. Thanks for the advice. I just wanted to clarify some things. I am content with my hair - I only use the flat if my hair is terribly wild. It is still in the awkward stage and sometimes I look like I have purposefully teased my hair on the sides! I just straighten the bad parts parts on a low heat setting.
Don't get too worried about what people sometimes say about damage on this board.
As long as you don't overuse them, use good irons and good product with them, you should be fine.
It's the same with everything. fruit is good for you, but if you eat too much, it ends up being bad. Think of it like that.
Dont.....thats the best way.

The possible damage is also dependent upon your hair type and the health of the hair that you begin with. The people who have experienced damage might not have began with very healthy hair. Or they did not know how to properly use the equipment. Or their hairtype is just too fragile to use it.
I began using a large curling iron at the beginning stages of my growth (7 years ago). I liked the results so much that I've continued to use it. I only use it on the ends, but it really makes a difference in how my hair lays. I have very healthy hair to just above my waist.
Learn how to properly use whatever tool you choose. A professional stylist is educated on them.
Kyle,
I've been using an iron for over a month now. With my type of hair, damage isn't an issue. It really has made all the difference in the world in the look of my hair and I don't regret it at all. I use it on a medium setting...and pretty much every day. Depending on the weather, sometimes I just have to do a little "touch up."
Take care and keep it growin'!
Brett
Do you actually mean straightners or an iron for clothes? Because an iron will seriously singe your hair. I believe its best to just leave your hair alone or comb it now and again. Keep those locks growing!
