Hi. I've been a lurker here for a while and decided i would finally come out of the shadows. My name is Mathew and I am currently a junior in high school. I live in north western Pennsylvania. My top interests are computer programming, playing cello, and weather. I enjoy playing in 2 music groups, working with the school robotics team, and predicting weather. Below is the story about how I got to where I am now in my long hair journey. It's kinda long, so you can skip it if you want to.
My hair story starts in October 2005. I decided that I would grow my hair out. However, I didn't know anything about the subject and didn't feel like searching, so when my hair started growing out of control (I have curly hair, see pics), I got it cut in about January 2006. Then I decided to grow it again. Once again, I let my mom trim the bangs in Feb. 2006. Shortly after, I found this wonderful site and all the links to help me get started. After that, I let my hair grow. Then, 1 week ago (Feb. 10, 2007), I had it cut. The reason... I was under a lot of stress for about a month, so I couldn't take my hair (it was entering the second awkward stage where you can't put it in a tail, but it's long enough to get in the way). Now I regret the decision, but I am determined to grow it long again.
My goal is to grow it for 2 years without any cuts. Also, I am going to take a picture of it everyday and put it into a slideshow, just like the kind found on the net.
This is a picture of what my hair looks like now:

That's all,
Mathew
Hi. Your hair looks cool longer. Good luck. I felt like cutting all mine off today - It curled and frizzed all over the place.
Thanks, I can't wait until it's back to that length. And yeah, the frizz sucks.
Good luck=)
I hope you achieve your goal.It would be interesting to see your slideshow in a couple years time.
a.
Thanks. And yeah, I think that the slideshow will be a fun project to do.
Welcome to the board, Matt! It'll be fun to see your slideshow in a couple years. Until then, I hope you enjoy the board and look forward to your input as well. =)

Thanks. I'm sure that I will have a very good experience on this message board.
welcome to the board Matt, this is the place for information and even more for support in keeping awkward stage hair. Now that you are here you can think about the pros and cons of long hair before you cut, assuming you're tempted again. We have a two week rule here where you can only cut your hair short if you have consistently wanted it to be short EVERY SINGLE DAY of the two weeks.
I know about stress and I know that when things are really awful the last thing you care about and want to deal with is hair. But the stress usually passes, so let the hair stay next time. Cause we all know that won't be the last stress time :)
Anyway welcome and good luck growing this time!
Thanks. I will have to remember the 2 week rule the next time I think about getting it cut.
Hi Matt
I know the awkward stage can be very annoying when you have curly hair but try to resist the temptation to cut it. Use lots of conditioner wear caps or hats or if your not a hat person try gels to keep it from being insane.
I can only suggest electric shock therapy for your urge to cut. Every time you touch a pair of scissirs or look at a barber shop, or styling salon you have an electric shock administered by someone preferably a sadist.(they're much more reliable) This will help you achieve the length you want. LOL
Good luck and keep us posted
Kevin
Kevin,
That is one of the most brilliant (and hilarious!) suggestions I have ever read here... I think the hyperboard should adopt it as our new "rule" (even better than the old 2-week rule)!!!
Take care, and thanks for the fun read! And also: a big hearty WELCOME to you, Matt!

Thanks. Now that I have a cool hat to wear, I will be able to tame my hair outside. And electric shock therapy sounds like a very effective method of controlling the urge to cut it :).
Yes, definitely looks better longer! As hard as it is, resist the temptation to cut it and you'll be rewarded with nice, long hair you can tie back into a ponytail. I'm glad I persevered. Looks like you were quite close to being able to tie your hair back. Good luck!
My blog, with more pics and weird stuff
Yeah, I also like it a lot better longer. I must resist the urge to cut it.
Welcome to the Hyperboard and thank you for sharing the two photos. Your hair is coming along extremely well and it certainly looks terrific! Just hold on a bit longer as 2 years will arrive before you know it.
Again welcome to the Hyperboard.
I think you might have the pictures confused, or maybe I misunderstood what you said. The short hair is the current pic, long hair is from 2 weeks ago. Anyways, I also hope the 2 years goes by quickly.
Welcome - and much better it looks long with the centre part.
Glad you have supportive parents.
Thanks. I wish the second part were true though. My parents weren't very supportive of my long hair. My mom told me she liked it long, but that was after she cut it. My dad and the rest of his side of the family hate it. My sister sort of liked it, but she hates guys with ponytails, so after I put it in a pony tail, she wouldn't have liked it. However, all of my friends are supportive, which definitely helps.
sorry to hear about the cut buddy, but one thing about hair at your age, is that it will grow back ;) so no worries. good luck with the new growth ;) and if you feel like cutting your hair i strongly recommend the shock therapy mentioned earlier ;) hehehe
Thanks. My grandpa always teased me that he wanted some of my hair because he has a bald spot. I always found that really funny. In the meantime, I will have to figure out some way to implement the shock therapy ;)
Hi Matt,
Welcome to the hyperboard! You will find a community here like no other. You have a great head of hair, all the best in your new journey to long hair, we will be with you every step of the way. I do hope that the issues causing your stress are behind you.
All the best and keep us updated,
David
Thanks, I'm sure that this will be a great community, as I've seen from when I lurked around. The stress issues have now gone away, and I'm ready to start growin it again and handle whatever future issues that may arise.
Your interest is programming? Hey, mine too! I know only a certain comfy scripting language, but I have made really cool things with it! Dozens of games in total and my specialty... visual ornamental animated psychedelic sacred geometry!
Here are some older creations of mine:

The newest graphic stuff is unfortunately quite big, so I can't it put online...
Hi, it's always cool to meet another programmer. That's some really cool stuff you've created. I'm not a big graphics person. The only code I have written that outputted graphics was PHP code for a website. I've written stuff in C, C++, Java, Javascript, PHP, Python, Basic. It's really fun stuff. Next year, I'm in charge of programming the robot for the school's robotics team. Time to warm up my C programming skills.

Welcome Matt and good luck on your longhair journey.
I was a bit surprised that you listed "weather" as an interest...not too many young folks are drawn in that direction. I spent almost 20 years as a meteorologist, which is a fascinating field and with today's technology is even more so. You may want to consider it as a career.
Thanks for Sharing

Yeah, I've always been fascinated by weather since I was really young. For Christmas, 10 years ago, I got a weather book from which I taught myself most of what I know about weather. If I didn't have as much of an interest in computers, I would be considering it for a career, but for now it seems more like a hobby.
Matt
Hi Walter,
I actually thought about getting into meteorology when I was younger, I had and still have a huge interest in it. I understand all the terms, but I never took it up as a course of study in university, FAR too many physics classes, lol! Hence my graduation with Masters in chemistry, where I have worked for the past 30 to 35 years.

Hi Matt,
Welcome! It's nice to have another cellist on the board.
Good luck.
Arnold
I think it's cool when you meet people on the net with the same interests. Nice to meet you.
Man, your hair sure did look awesome. That was a terrible mistake you made. Hopefully, This time you will avoid scissors and grow it LONG!. Good luck and WELCOME ABOARD!
Thanks. I guess we all learn from our mistakes.
