Hello, I am growing my hair out still. I as with many other
people I'm sure, have the worst choice of style, and actually I don't have any. Anyways, I am a musician (guitar no less), and am wondering what chics dig what type of clothes on longhairs? I am thinking of casual, I almost always wear jeans, and don't really want to change that, but I am not sure any suggestions? (I live in washington US, basicly a rainy state, but occasional sun like now) thanks for your time, look foward to a response.
Dustin
Dude! Don't tell anyone that it's sunny here! :) No, unlike what Dustin said, it's RAINING all the time... (just kidding - I WISH IT WERE, tho - got near the 90s) ;) In any case, AFAIK, the women I've dealt with usually don't care... So, you probably will be fine. 90% of the time, I'm wearing jeans, a t-shirt, hiking boots, and have my hair in a tail with a scrunchy (don't want to damage my hair with the normal elastic bands)... The other 10%, I'm a bit more dressed up, with a nicer shirt, dockers, loafers, etc, but still, the hair is in a tail... Don't really like it loose, but then again, that's just me.
-J (who happens to be 95% of the way back to my hair length before the sis got to me on 2/4/01 - need another 1.5" of length)
Really, congrats to you, I am alittle past my ears currently, although my family has been getting increasingly objectionate to my hair, I am wondering how long this awkward stage will be, its been 7 months since I decided to grow my hair out, and I haven't got one damn haircut, don't think I will either till its long enough, then I think I'll need to get it layered, it is quite a blob (thick wavy ack!) John, you live in washington too? I live in Puyallup. In any case, I usually where a muscle shirt, or something of that type, and jeans, I guess I could stick with that bit....
Dustin
Once you can get it into a tail, your family will probably leave you alone. I'm getting a mop built up on the top, too... Yes, Dustin, I'm up in Duvall. Used to be a Mercer Islander (for my first 20.5 years, then have been out here for the past 5).
-J
Yeah, right now I can kind of get it into a tail, its about an inch into it after i get it up like that, in the meantime I just use alittle gel till my hair dries, then I finger comb it out and let it do what it wants, stay back, go parted, whatever...I was up past Mercer Island just a bit ago, family reunion.
Anywho, I'll try black, I tend to go to white, but I do like darker colors much more.
Dustin
Oh, btw, Dustin, when you do get your hair long enough to have even an 8-9" long tail, there's someone on eBay selling the best hair scrunchies you'll find. Trust me on this. I'm in no way affiliated with them (they're in Nova Scotia anyway - so it'd be kinda hard), but here's the link. Of course, the woman, who owns the eBay Store I'm sending the link of, tends to advertise more for women, but is okay with us guys buying her stuff and using it... Just a shameless plug.

speaking purely as a chick here.....we don't really care what you wear when we meet you....in fact once we get you we will probably end up shopping for you and either buying you a whole new wardrobe or helping you to buy yourself one so you might as well wait for us...lol......as long as your hair is clean and your personal grooming is too, down or up is fine...we care more about how you treat us, your smile, what we see in your eyes, and your personality...I do enjoy seeing a nice cozy flannel plaid shirt in the winter, levis, cargo pants, v neck sweater type with horizontal chest stripes mixed in, good solid footwear(never buy cheap shoes)...keep your back straight, your shoulders and head up, walk with confidence and put a big smile on and you will have all the CHICKS ya want!!!!
When in doubt, wear black. Pay no attention to fashion fads.
I wear black. Military surpluss boots, Black Jeans, Black t-shirts. Lots of silver jewlery, too: Heavy Thor's Hammer, 7 earrings amoung both ears rings on both ring and both pinky, includeing a "Finger Armour" that covers the whole ring finger which has 4 hinges and bends with the right ring finger.
I think black leather pants with a black tshirt looks nice enuff =) either that or jeans for me...
From personal experience I know that girls like guys with long hair
and also guys with leather pants so if you alternate leather pants
with your jeans it may make life more interesting.
Sometimes silver jewelery helps.
Hum... Well, the girls that I hang around with, they all enjoy the natural kinda look... its weird cuz I don't think it looks natural. What they like, from 18-26 (so far) is a plane solid color t-shirt. No pattern or decal, unless at the bottom seem. Above that is a darker long sleeved button down shrit with rolled up sleaves, (rolled up mind you, not, scrunched up) just past the elbows. They enjoy looking at the forearms. *eg* They also enjoy cargo pants. either olive or khaki, but nice looking jeans gets their attention too. Always complimentary colors with the shirt. And EVERY color works with either khaki or olive... For shoes, I wear slip on leather shoes... uhm, I think they are sketchers... i don't know... and no socks.
They say I look like health-food store boy. I even have a green canvas apron I throw on just to make them giggle but thats different. I advise not wearing an apron such as that while in any hippy/occult/craft store in washington cause they ask if you can help them. *g*
I guess it resembles what someone might wear while camping.
An alternate way to wear the sleaves (may work better if you are a guitarist.) is to fold them up to your elbow, then take a pin and pin the inner side of the sleave. Then unrolling the outerside. gives a cool look.
Anyway... yah... I'm really getting tired of the hot weather... give me the raiN!! RAIN!!!! Thats the only reason I am staying in Washington, is the rain... that and family... but, yeah who's counting them *eEg*

BtW ( My hair is about 11 inches in the bangs, and it gradually slopes back to 8 inches. I can pull it back into a neato artistic, Keith Ledger "Ten things I hate about you" pony tail. Sometimes I leave a small amount of bangs hanging out to fall in my face.
The girls go crazy over my look. Too bad too!)
<<<<: Hello, I am growing my hair out still. I as with many other
Hi, I'm female, so I don't really know why I'm at this board, I'm just really into guys with long hair, and I have long hair myself, so I figure... why not. Um... I guess it wouldn't hurt to get a females perspective? What I think, you should dress however you feel most comfortable. Don't stick to the trends or anything, that's kind of, lame, to say the least. Experiment, with clothes... just find out what you're most comfortable in and what looks good. Personally, I am attracted to all sorts of guys, but the clothes don't really make the man. Usually attracted to musicians, with common interestests, and well... long hair. Clean, that's all, clean is a plus... clean hair, clean clothes, teeth brushed, lol... you get the point. It really depends on the woman, I guess. All in all, as long as you're comfortable with yourself and don't try to put up a front, that's all that matters. When it comes to women, it's usually common interests and truth that really matter. If you're just looking for well, sex, or whatever, then... it probably depends on where you are. If you go to some club in the city dressed as a forest ranger, even with long hair, I doubt you'll get anywhere with the women. Okay, I think I've said enough, lol.
There are certain stereotypes that float around about longhairs. We've all heard the biker, hippie, drug dealer, computer nerd, rocker, etc. comments. This list is not exhaustive, but you get my drift.
The clothing you select will tend to drop you into one of those stereotypes in the eyes of many. If you like being one of those, go for the clothes that mark you that way! I've found members of the public to be far more accepting of me when I do. Just as people are uncomfortable when they don't know what sex someone is, they feel a similar discomfort when they don't know what kind of longhair you are.
You also have to have the physical characteristics to play the part you choose. If you are scrawny, you won't come off as a WWF wrestler. Be a rocker instead.
The categories of longhairs that people see are shallow, of course, but in the public's mind they are real. We can use them to our advantage to gain more instant acceptance, if such a first-impression does not run counter to our actual sense of self.
I, too, wear jeans and am casual. I'm also 54 and graying a bit. The stereotype that fits me best is "hippie", and people will tag me as that even if I don't try to look like one, but when I do (not going overboard, but just reasonably so), people open up to me so much faster! Somehow, my being something they can quantify puts them very much at ease.
Am I really a hippie? That's hard to say. I listen to sixties and seventies music and I came of age during that time. I know the lingo and probably use it a bit. I've always been clean of mind and body, though, and some people have the opposite sense of hippies in their definition. Indeed, everyone defines all those stereotypes in their own way, so you will be seen as meeting one or not by some and not by others, because most of the stereotypes don't have precise definitions. You probably won't meet even your own concept of a definition precisely. But no one does.
My mindset at the moment is that people will try to stuff me into one of those categories anyway, so I might as well be a hippie since it's one of the categories I'm most comfortable with and I look the part anyway. My thought is, "Why fight it, why not enjoy it!"
Back to the issue of "clothes", I'd say, "Pick clothes that tell people you are the kind of longhair you feel best being!"
You said you are a musician and play a guitar. You are in luck, because that's one of the stereotypes. Look at what other longhaired musicians wear, and take your clothing ideas from them. You will also see subtleties among musicians. What era and what music style do you want to celebrate? Play the part! A good time is guaranteed. :-)
Bill
Same with me. But, I call long-hair a "hippy" as opposed to "hippie".
