Four full days of hard driving bracketed by two half days of loading/unloading and driving. Rain, snow, crosswinds, deserts (my lips are cracked and dry, that never happened back home) and some iffy motels. All in all though, a blissfully event-free trip.
For those of you who saw my other post and clued in to the fact that I have a flickr account, I'll post pictures for those who are curious. There aren't any more hair-related pix though, just my impressions of the drive. Oh, but there were so many spectacular photo opportunities on that drive, it was a shame I had to "make time" and couldn't frame up some better shots.
I am glad you got there safe and sound with no major problems. That is one hell of a long drive. I hope your working commute will be much easier :)
Now I have to get a flickr account to see your travel pics :)
Good luck on your new adventure!
No, you don't need an account, just hit this URL:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/istartedi/
I haven't posted any new pix yet though, I need to set aside some time to weed through the good vs. bad, and resize then (you can't post raw 10 MP pic with a free account, although I think you can with a pro account that co$t$ $$$).
I hope you are feeling better.
get a webhost and post your pics there... most give like 100G and you could put your whole harddrive there if you wanted to..
Oh, I've thought about it, but being the kind of guy I am, I'd want to do it *right*. Bloggish sites like flickr make it easy to just throw stuff up. What you lose in terms of control, you gain in not having to admin a site. At some point, anybody who runs a site will have headaches.
Back when I ran a site, I put up some animated GIFs. One day I noticed that my hit count went way up. I thougth, cool! Then I realized that on some goofy forum full of smilies (you know the kind I'm talking about), someone had leached my GIFs. Not cool. Yeah, I know there are ways to prevent image leaches, but I didn't want to redo my nice static pages with something dynamic that had special code just to stop leaches. This, aside from a general lack of interest, was one of the reasons why I stopped running my own site to any great extent.
So. It's a tradeoff. I could do my own custom site, do it right, and have full control like the MLHH does, or I can be lazy and use something like flickr, and let their admins work on all those problems. It's a trade-off that works for me under the current circumstances, since I don't have the time to devote to doing a custom site. If I ever find myself with that kind of time, it means one of two things: I've become wildly successful and have retired early, or I've become unemployed and will be running back to DC with my tail between my legs.
If you are a natural geek, running your own site (I do) will save you time. I'd rather deal with balky technology than with balky site admins. Also, when I run my own site, I can do all the cool stuff I want! Or not. I can do the simple stuff if that is what at the moment I choose.
People who visit your own site will also enjoy it more. It will have the unique touches of your own creative hand, and their immersion into the mood you have set will not be disturbed with gaudy advertising.
As for "bandwidth thievery", on a minor scale it's so ingrained in Internet culture that few people sweat it. Every time people link photos from a site not their own, they are "stealing bandwidth", but on a non-commercial scale it all evens out. People surely sometimes link the photos that have been uploaded here at MLHH, so that does not make us feel guilty when our users link the photos of others.
I do have issues with commercial sites who steal bandwidth on a wide scale though. The one having their users use YOUR smilies was doing that. The worst sites are the "is he hot" sites whose entire business plan is based on having users evaluate photos whose bandwidth is stolen from others. If photos are going to be a major part of your site, you should be willing to host them!

Welcome to California, Steve. Hopefully you will have an easy period of adjustment to life here.

Loved your "hair" pic in OK.
You're right, there's not a whole lot to see here. lol
Good luck in your new place! =o)
Cool you've made it here! Looking forward to seeing you here in the Golden State!
While Steve works to gets his photos on line, feel free to look at some of ours. They are from a road trip across the country and back, two years ago:
Bill and Larry's Road Trip to the East Coast
Wow! That was quite a trip.
The only time I went out West was way back in '79 with my parents, and I didn't move the States to live until '89. I would like to take Catie and the kids out West. Andrew is nearly 14, so I guess time is running out. It seems more important to be able to take them to Europe again, but they should see it at least once.
Good to hear you made it Steve!
I'm sure you've had enough of getting your kicks on Route 66..

So glad you made it safe and sound. Once the dust has a chance to settle I doubt very much that you will regret this move in the slighest. CA is just such a great place!
Hey Steve, Great to see that you made it safely. I hope that you are able to settle in with out any stress, I know how stressful a long move can be. Did you drive by yourself?
Chris K
Congrats on the move!! I'll email you when I get back home [April 29th] and hopefully soon we can meet up.

I'm glad I got to see you again before you left. I hope it all goes well. It took me a while to respond, but I was looking at all of Bill's pictures!
