My wife was watching "The View" this A.M., and there was a stylist on who was talking about sulphate free shampoo. He said that the same sulphates that make shampoo lather also kill ticks and many other things that wouldn't seem conducive the healthy hair. I'd be interested how well a non-sudsing shampoo works. Anybody tried them?

I have seen product lists at the Long Hair Community hair site because there are so many people that wish to avoid sulfates so there is concern out there. One reason is that people have reported higher shedding when using sulfate products. I wouldn't worry to much from a tick killing ingredient standpoint though, I'm thinking the stylist might be overstating the danger. Sulfates might be used in tick sprays but probably not in the same amount in the shampoo bottle.
Lathering itself isn't necessary to cleaning hair but consumers have come to expect bubbles. I would think a change to sulfate-free shampoo can be made easily as long as you have the mindset that it will feel and behave completely differently from what standard shampoos are like.

A chemist's look at sulfates
Sulphates can't cause increased shedding, because hair grows out of the scalp and shampoos and the like can't penetrate the skin to affect the folicle, so for those who report increased shedding it's probably a coincidence.
