Yesterday was my company's annual "Bring Your Child to Work" day. One of my teammates is a married Mother of 3, her eldest being 12 or 13.
Shortly before the kids were given the grand tour of the building, they were allowed some time to hang out with their parents. My teammate's son saw my nails (I finally found a brand of black nail polish that doesn't chip within 48 hours of application - been wearing the same coat all week). He asked his Mom, "Why are his nails black?" His Mom said, "Well, he's a bit of a goth," to which he replied, "But you said people who dress funny don't get good jobs."
I eyed her, chuckling, and she just returned a wry grin, at which point her son added, "You know that mohawk I've been wanting?"
LOL!
Hello,
That reminds me of my first working experience back in 1978. My mom was worried about me as 1981 (College graduation) approached (still a long time away for me, but in her mindset I had to prepare now). My long hair was an off and off worry about me never landing a job. I was getting discouraged that I would end up living in a "stodgy", depressing world where I would have to conform, and blend in.
My worries sort of ended, when I landed a part time job, in the fall of 1978, as a computer programmer. I had a colleague with longer hair than me, and the question was closed. It lasted me 3 months while I went to school at the same time, but at least it gave me a view of office culture, and the does and don'ts of the world of work.
At least, from that experience I learned that long hair was accepted in some milieus, and some milieus were much more conforming with strict dress codes. I simply had to avoid those.
As graduation approached, in 1981, my job counselor told me to cut off my hair and look normal. Guess what, due to my 1978 experience, I was amongst the first hired despite my hair. I learned that it was better to tie it back for example.
Have a nice day,
Georges
Hi. I know this is a bit off the topic, but who is the picture of on your PC(The one in your avatar pic)?
That is funny and it would be interesting to see the kid in a few years. I work in the grocery biz and have been mid level management for years now and the hair has never been an issue. I've had a few interviews where they said I would have to cut it and I politely thanked them for their time and left. I've been hired with Longhair and promoted with it. Like Georges commented I find it expedient to tie it back at work.

Smart kid!
I was driving the bus the other day, and stopped to pick up a couple of longhaired kids. One pointed to my hair as I was opening the door, and they seemed releived to know that I wouldn't be judging them based on hair. Nice kids.
I also got a comment from a fellow longhair. He said, "It's nice that Sun Tran lets you grow your hair!" I replied that I thought so, too!

I do black nails once in a while. I'm not a goth either.
Never had a problem with chipping.

Way to battle stereotypes! Just awesome. you just gave that kid an education that another 3 years of schooling won't erase.
Congratulations!
