Hey Guys,
Ive never been much for putting gunk in my hair, but Im looking into gels to control it a bit. Specifically, Im trying to wear a [mini] ponytail at work with an Alice band, but the hair just behind the band and my ears tends to curl out and make the entire thing look ridiculous. Im honestly not much for the Alice bands (bandanas are far more my style), but the combination of that and the mini tail seem to make life a LOT cooler in the spring heat.
My hair is wavy, tends towards being slightly dry, and looks pretty much like my avatar picture.
1. What brands would you recommend?
2. Does this stuff wash out with water only, or do I have to shampoo it out? (I currently shampoo only every other day, or every three days.)
3. What sort of strength of hold do you think would work?
Thanks in advance for the advice!

Hi. I use flex normal hold gel (with silk and protein). It holds nicely but isnt heavy or too sticky. It washes out with water but can leave your hair looking dirty. I also found that it makes me itch a bit if I don't shampoo it out - all gels do that though. The loreal gels are also good but much more expensive.
Hi Mouse:
I've tried many gels over the year and my favorite is: AMERICAN CREW LIGHT HOLD GEL.
It's not sticky or greasy and rinses out with just water. Even though I tie my hair back, I use a bit of this stuff every day to keep down the fly-away hairs. It's a little bit on the costly side, but worth it IMHO. Good luck,
Vince
I'll keep my eye out for the Loreal and American Crew stuff. If this is anything like shampoo and conditioner, I can see giving several brands/types a shot.
Thanks for the input!

Hmm.
Tough call. I started my gel quest with the same concerns you have. I wanted/want to pull my hair back, but with curls/waves like ours, the flyaways are far too conspicuous (to put it mildly).
I have tried a couple different products and, while DippyDo Extreme Sport hold boasted a strength level of 10, it could't hold down the thick curls I have.
What does work (and which rinses well-enough away with water that you can get away with skipping the washing every-other day or so) is the L'Oreal Radical Gel -Fibre Glure, Texture Gel-.
I think if you start with a stonger gel, you can just use far less and mix with water to dillute, but if you start too weak...well then you just have to buy another bottle.
Hope this helps, Mouse. Keep up with the awesome progress.
