I've had some problems with intense abdominal pain, so I went to my doctor. I'm not messing around with something like this! She ordered some tests, so after bloodwork, a CAT scan, an MRI, an Ultrasound, etc., she concluded that I have a fatty liver. This is not unusual for a fat guy like me. Normally, it's not something to worry too much about (that's for ANYBODY ELSE but me). But in my case, it's causing big trouble. The liver itself doesn't have pain receptors, but the membrane around it does. Apparently, it's getting stretched, and other organs are putting pressure on it from the outside. This comes and goes, but usually hits in the middle of the night, interrupting sleep. Right now, I'm sitting up waiting for the pain to stop so I can go back to bed.
According to Dr. Ralph (yes, that is her last name!), the only way to get rid of the pain is to lose a lot of weight, fast. That means I'm in for Gastric Bypass surgery. My wife had this done 1 1/2 yrs ago, and has lost 135 lbs. It literally saved her life! I'm not worried about going through this at all. I've seen some of the things that happen after surgery, and I can deal with them. The thing that bothers me is that sometimes after a major surgery, hair falls out like snowflakes! One poor lady ended up with a shiny scalp with a few wispy hairs hanging on for dear life. My wife was able to mostly avoid this by taking Biotin and getting lots of protein. I'll be following the same regimine and hoping for similar results. I'm also looking forward to seeing how I look in the kilt when I'm not so tubby. Oh, and, after the pain stops, it'll be nice to get a full nights sleep again.
Wish me luck!
Lon
Good luck, man, and do express to your doctors the importance of your hair to you. There are often choices of routines, and some impact hair more than others. MOST men don't care that much about their hair, and they may just assume that is your feeling if you don't tell them otherwise.

That surgery really scares me. Make sure you go to an EXCELLENT doctor - I haven't heard many good things about it. I think your hair may fall out initially but not all of it. If you take vitamins and keep your diet balanced it should be okay.
Hi Lon:
Have you looked into the Lap Band Surgery? It is much less invasive, much easier to recover from, and will give the same results.
Whatever you decide, best of luck to you.
George
Hi Lon,
I just wanted to extend my prayers and best wishes to you in your upcoming surgery. Try not to worry about your hair too much right now, stress can be a terrible thing. I am SO happy that things went so well for your wife, perhaps the best thing to do for now is to do exactly what she has done, and I am SURE your mane will come out just fine.
Rememeber, we are here for you, and be sure to keep us updated. And remember, we are DEFINITELY looking forward to your kilt pictures!
All the best,
David
Hi Lon:
Best of luck with this. Pulling for you man.
Vince.
I wish you a successful surgery and recovery and indeed hopefully your regimine of vitamins and healthy eating will keep your hair intact. As much as we charish our hair our over all health is far more improtant. I'm wondering if that lady who's hair fell out if it grew back eventually or was it permanent.
Good luck
Kevin
I know a lady that's going in for that right now. She went to a doctor in Michigan for the operation. She hasn't returned yet, but I hope it helps.
I'm trying to lose weight by other means (dietary changes) and I'm really scared of any kind of surgery or operation - not to mention the possibility of losing hair! I didn't know about that. So far so good with watching the kinds of foods I'm eating. It's slow but hopefully it will last and I'll keep up with it. Can't wait to see what I look like a few pounds lighter and with longer hair!
All the best for you and your weight loss/long hair journey too!
My blog, with more pics and weird stuff
Good luck, Lon! I've seen several people go through the surgury with flying colors and end up much happier and healthier in the long run (and all of them kept their hair). Get ready to resize the kilt!

Best wishes go to you Lon, its all for the best in the long run.
Take it easy, Dave
Best of luck, Lon. That sounds intense. Hopefully, with the experience your and wife have from her journey, you'll be able to avoid the potential mishaps like hairloss. Looking forward to your next update pic- with even longer hair and a well-fit kilt.
Cheers!

Hi Lon.
I wish you all the best in your surgery and recovery, you must look at the bigger picture. Your going to be way healthier, thinner, and with vitamins being taken, i would think your hair not only will still be long but even better condition.Think of all the positives that will come from this (even the kilt)lol. Take care , Jonny H uk
Good luck with your surgery, Lon, and let's hope that you will keep your hair.
I had considered the same kind of surgery a few years ago, but decided against it - despite my weight I don't have any problems except for impaired mobility, so that the surgery is riskier than my obesity. I am trying to be physically active and fit as much as possible in my situation, and that helps a lot.
