im confused about that
is it when your hair starts off lookin like an afro
and then calms down later? or somethin else
The "awkward stage" of hair growth is when your hair starts to get longer than you are used to seeing it; but it is not long enough yet to restrain it back into a ponytail. At least, that's how I tend to define the term, "awkward stage"...
For example: most guys have the traditional, average male hair style of hair-length not being much below the eyebrows in front, not covering the ears much on the sides, and rarely touching the collar much in back. This boring look (big YAWWWWN here...) has been imposed on men in Western society in general for quite a long time now. Obviously, this hair length and style is considered to be quite "practical", --- as well as shorter styles on men are also considered traditionally to be both "acceptable" as well as "practical". So, when a man's hair starts getting so long that it begins to constantly fall across his eyes, covers his ears, and starts creeping down over his shirt collar (GASP! God forbid!!), by those who believe in "traditional" male haircut standards, many people will look at you at this point, thinking to themselves (or worse, even saying out loud), "You NEED a haircut!" And if you stick to your guns, as the months roll along, your hair will look even *more* out-of-control, --- falling across your face and maybe into your mouth as you're trying to eat your soup; completely covering your ears and poofing out like "wings" on the side; and beginning to even rest on your shoulders in back (OMG, this is just SHOCKING!!!!!!! - lol)!!
And it's not until the day that you're able to completely tie your hair all back into a tail that you finally feel your look has returned back to some degree of having "control"... This whole process takes anywhere between a year (minimum) and 2 years (with about the year & a half mark that most guys start to feel less "awkward").
Hope this explains it!

Ken;
You have most delightfully described my hair! lol. I woke up this morning and looked in the mirror and thought, Oh my word; what is that on my head?! - and to think; I have at least another year of this ahead... (sigh).
Well, its still better than short hair.
Peace
