Here is the story of my hair as briefly as I can put it:
I've been growing it for maybe 3 years now.
For about 1 whole year, I straightened it almost every day (about half of that year I put heat protection spray in pre-straightening).
I felt straightening it really made it look nice because it really did look such a mess with it curly and almost afro-like, and I was not in a situation where I could just wear a baseball hat to cover it up (it was about 1/4 down my back at that time with the "back" part of my hair being far longer than the front)
I realise this was a huge mistake, because now i've paid the price by having to have many haircuts over time, gradually getting rid of my split ends.
I mainly concentrated straightening the front parts of my hair, as the back parts weren't so bad as they were longer and had some weight to weigh themself down- consequently they weren't as kinky.
But now - since my last trim (when everything seemed to be fine - hair was 1/3 down my back easily, and now it is about 1/4 ) I have noticed that many hairs ... even the hairs on the back of my head, which never really suffered from straightening or harsh care... are of different length.
Is this just part of the hair growth cycle?
I do find a lot of hairs come out in the shower, but i guess that is normal.
It seems far worse than an average long haired person (although I am aware that we lose up to 100 hairs a day etc), especially when I look at it with the sunlight on it.
Perhaps its appearance is worsened by the fact that my hair is curly and is quite fair.
I don't have any pictures of my hair, but a good example is seen at this link

Yes, that is down to the hair growth cycle. All of your hairs on your head are growing and falling out at different times.
Some of them could be due to breakage from physical damage i.e tying it back, playing sport, straightening etc.
Yeah - that is what I thought. I'm certain that straightening has something to do with the loss of some hair, but I was surprised that after just one trim - i noticed such a drastic change, especially on just the hair on the back of my head .. which previously to the trim, looked perfectly healthy.
Perhaps some people suffer this stage of the hair cycle, (if indeed it is part of the hair cycle) - but it is not as obvious as mine ... as the hair is fair and curly.
The picture I posted originally is sort of how my hair looks with light shining on it.
I guess I'll just ask my hairdresser when she comes round in the next 2 months or so. :) Thanks for your reply
i'm sorry for you but straightening your hair every day did damaged it !
you should stop straightening your hair and let it grow naturally :)
