I had a rather bizarre encounter at work.
I have waist length hair, a co-worker asked if I was going
to shave my head during the summer, "Doesn't it get hot?"
I said no, I'm not going to shave it and no it doesn't get
hot.
BTW, she is from Viet Nam and also has waist length hair.
So far the boss hasn't complained about my hair.
What an odd question for someone who also has long hair.
I've never thought of cutting my hair because of heat...
It also protects my neck from sunburn :)
Silly question really. Why would you want to grow your hair for bout 6 years, to shave it all off for for summer! :P
Just a question, when we're talking about a summer, does the hair lose their colour when exposed to the sun? My top hair are brown, but under them, there's a layer of much darker hair. I know, the hair has various hues which together makes the result, but this is too regular.
The sun bleaches the hair naturally.
Not only are my older ends a totally different shade than my scalp hair, I can see the difference in my cat who loves the sun and gets much more exposure to ultraviolet rays. She's a black cat but brown on the outermost hairs.

So if I let my hair get exposed to the sun a LOT will I be able to lighten my hair naturally with minimal damage? I wonder what is the least damaging way to lighten hair color?
Well, I have half-asian hair, and most of my splits and damage are in my reddish brown (sun bleached) streaks.
And my hair turns to a light blond at the 3 foot mark. You can see this in the photo. I try to not go out in the mid day sun to minimize this.
Absalom
Yes, and while it is bleaching the color, it is also damaging the proteins that form the strands.
If your mane is long enough, go to the mirror and take the tips of your mane's longest strands and hold them up against your forehead by your hairline. For most longhairs, the difference in color will be striking! A lot of guys don't realize how much their hair fades in the light over several years of exposure to daylight, which the tips have undergone. (The hair right at their hairline is almost brand new, of course.) Many guys think all their hair is the same color, and they are shocked to see that it isn't. Over time it does a slow fade to blond.
Bill
Heh! Or, in some of our cases- to GREY! Better than not having the hair to fade, though [grin].
I agree, in fact last summer I found it cooler with hair and a beard, i beleive the hair traps a pocket of cooler air between the skin and the ravages of the sun.
I have had zero sunburns ever since I grew my hair. I realize why the arabs were wearing the headcoverings all those centuries.
Hey nuttidave
I have always found this to be the case with myself. Wow........when I fell for that "buzz-Cut" could I EVER feel the heat roasting my scalp. Your theory sure makes alot of sense to me. And then on the other hand, long hair helps to hold the heat in during the Winter months.
all the best-
Justin~
hmm, this means she doesn't like your long hair (I think, that's the only logical explanation)
At first it does sound silly for another longhair to ask, particularly since your hair has clearly been around for years and as many summers to get that long. It may be that she puts her hair up and off her neck when it is hot and was wondering what men do since most don't wear their hair in a bun.
Elizabeth
...effort, time and patience, and she asks if you're going to shave it off.
Does she want you to cut off your arms as well?
Honestly.
My explanation is that she would like to shave her head in the summer, but feels compelled to keep her hair long, very likely due to pressure from family. She obviously has no idea that there wouldn't be anywhere near enough time to grow it back in between seasons, probably at least partly because she has had waist length hair all all her life.
Women sometimes do get pressured by others to have long hair, or sometimes to cut it (although usually only to shoulder length). Men don't have a monopoly on that problem, although the one big difference is that the 'model' of how long some people think our hair should be is ridiculously short.
I differ from some other posters in that I think long hair does make you hotter in summer, although I would never cut it off because of that.

Yes its hotter if you have it loose. The air that is stuck between the hairs makes great isolation. This is how fur/hair keeps animals warm ;) and our heads.
If the heat is a 'problem', tie it tight, this way there is less air that isolates.
