Im only an estimated 6 months to my hair reaching my butt. Keep in mind I started out bald. 3.5 years ago my hair was shaved to less than 1/16 of an inch. I think I am at waist length now. I am between 5'7" to 5'8". Keep in mind my hair is slightly wavy too.
About how many inches is this per year?
I'm guessing that is about 7 to 8 inches per year.that's a very good rate!!!
i just measured my longest hairs about ten days ago..they were about 12.5 inches!!i was surprised.I started with about 1.5 inches of hair on top, that means I grew 11 inches in about 20 months!!I'm guessing that's about a 6.5 inches per year growth rate!!not bad..^_^
I looked at your picture you posted a few threads down and your hair only looks like it's almost elbow length (and it looks like you're leaning your head back)
Let me make sure my waist length is the same defition as your waist length. When Standing an in upright position The ends of my hair reach about to my waist. When I lean back my hair reaches to my butt. To clarify.
how long your hair actually is. For an average person, your hair length has to be 1/3 of your height to reach your waist.
For you, with typical proportions, a waist length ponytail would be 22.5 inches measured from the top of the hair tie.
I am slightly over 69 inches tall, but for me, waist length is only 22 inches. My limbs are consistant with someone 6 feet tall, but my torso is consistant with someone 66 inches tall.
The question is, do you have typical proportions or do you have unusually long limbs for your height?
A 22.5 inch ponytail would be fast growth for 3 1/2 years. That would be an average rate of 0.536 inches per year. Bear in mind that the apparent growth rate decreases the longer your hair gets, since fewer individual hairs survive to such great lengths.

I believe Scott meant an average growth rate of 0.536 feet per year, or 6.43 inches per year, slightly over the average 6 inches per year (.5 inches per month).

Wow, I did not catch that. It should read 0.536 inches per month. That is a fast growth rate when you consider that few hair strands survive to reach extreme length. The longer they get, the more loss due to breakage at the tips.
I lose a lot to breakage. I have a lot of shed hairs that are fragments. Some fragments are an inch long and some are a foot long. Due to this damage, at some point, your hair will appear to grow only 1 or 2 inches per year. It is still growing at the same rate as when you started, but it is breaking off nearly as fast as it is growing. When the loss due to shedding and breakage reach a point of equilibrium, terminal length is reached. In conclusion, you want to minimize or eliminate breakage to allow your hair to reach full length.

How long is your hair in terms of inches, Absalom? I've always been curious and if you have mentioned it in the past, which you probably have, I didn't see it.
I just measured my ponytail and the longest strands reach 40 inches. It is hard to measure with a ruler and my hair is in need of washing so there is a bit more wave in it than usual.
When clean and combed out I may gain another inch.
My longest shed strand was 44 7/8". I saved it in a ziplock bag.

Shut up and be happy :D
Hi Kenneth,
You appear to have fast growing hair, 3.5 years to waist length seems pretty fast. The time it takes to grow waist length hair is dependent on your height as well as your growth rate. The easiest way to determine is to simply measure your longest strands, in 3.5 years, from a buzz, would translate to 21 inches, anything above that is fast. Justin took 4 years to reach waist length, he also has faster than normal growth, but his height is 6', hence the longer time to reach waist length.
I have slow growth myself, my longest strands, stretched, are around 18 inches, in 37 months, starting from 4 or 5 inches in April 2004. I had an eight month period, however, where my hair appeared not to be growing at all, due to abuse from straightening.

Ones height does play a role in all of this. The taller the person, the longer it takes the hair to reach waist length. Took me 4 years, but I am 6' tall.
Sounds as if you are doing just fine at 3.5 years of long hair growth. Growth rates DO vary now and then, so that also has to be taken into consideration.
Your right Tonto I'm 1" less than 6 foot so I have a 1" advantage mate!

Actually John, you have about 1/3 of an inch. The distance from the base of your head to your waist is about 1/3 of your height. That is 24 inches for 6 feet tall, and 23 2/3 inches at 5'11".
Disclaimer: The above is an average value.
This value does vary considerably. For someone with short legs and a long torso it could be 35% of your height. For someone with very long legs and a short torso it could be 30%.

That seems normal to me for your height. I was past midback in about the same time and I'm 6'3" with a fairly long torso.
You'd probably have to measure your hair in terms of how many inches it is from the hairline to be able to quantify inches per year.
My hair when it was waist length was a little over 40 inches.
That seems about right. I'm 5'4" and its been a little over two years since I started growing my hair out. Like you I started growing my hair out from a shaved head. My hair is currently at the lower section of my back.
I reached it in 3.5 years. So my answer is no, it's not that unusual.
I was checking out my hair earlier and stretched my tail down (to counter the waves at the end) to see how long it is, and the tip just reached my belt. I am at 3 years and 8 months from a grade 1 shaved head, with zero trims. The longest shed strand I've ever found was 23 inches, which was about 3/4 months ago.
By the way, I didn't post in your update thread, but your hair looks great. You've been on the forum at least as long as I have, and it's cool to see your progress.
