I've decided to take the plunge and grow my hair long, not to "fit in" to any particular group or to project any particular image, but out of simple curiosity. I've never had my hair long, and I want to see what I'll look like after it grows out.
I've already committed myself not to cut it for the next 18 months, at which point I'll decide whether to keep it (or to grow it longer).
Any last-minute tips or comments?
Above all else; have fun with it and enjoy the changes!
Good luck!
Good luck, Dave, I hope the experience is fun and educational for you. Be aware that there's an "awkward phase" until the hair is long enough to pull back in a ponytail; until then, it's awkwardly in the way over your face, eyes and ears and difficult to get to look nice. Once past that hurdle, the rest is easy. This message board is a great source of inspiration and practical tips about dealing with long hair.

Let me echo that "Good luck, Dave". I, as the owner of a longhair-friendly men's styling salon, also hope the experience is fun one for you. Chris is right on about that "awkward phase". That seems to be the turning back point for many guys. I generally work real close with my clientele at that point--to get them through it without giving up.My best success story: a client worked on the tarmac of a local major airport and was really bothered about the not-quite-long-enough-for-the-ponytail hair being in his face, etc. He was at the mercy of the elements. When I showed him how to remedy the situation without any cutting, NINE of his co-workers decided to grow their hair real long. That issue had always been their "give-it-up" point. For you, Dave, the contributors to the board will definitely be a source of help--appeal to them. From their own experience they can offer great advice and encouragement. If you feel you need some professional hands-on help--be extra careful when choosing a resource person.Go for it! And keep us all posted on your progress!
I am curious about what the "remedy" was that you suggested to the "tarmac" worker whose hair wasn't long enough for a pony-tail?
Unfortunately, it is a combing technique coupled with light gel and aerosol spray that is simple to demonstrate but impossible to explain clearly in words.
I've been doing my homework about that phase: my idea was that I could - sparingly - use a good quality gel for the front in the morning before I go to the office, and wear a baseball cap on other days.
If you can suggest anything more effective, of course, I'd be delighted to hear it.
I have decided to grow mine out as well. Hair cut was about 1 month ago. I can't wait for my hair to grow!
Yes, but it's gonna generate some flack - Don't develop a phobia
of your stylist. I didn't care when I grew mine out that I took
a couple of extra months - if you keep the edges neat it looks
purposeful, even during the akward bits - the folks who look ratty
(in the opinion of one) tend to be in a hurry, have bad relations
with their stylist - or none at all. Yes, they get there and
we all may end up in the same place - but have some fun on the
way - you'll look better for it.
