What are your thoughts on vitamins. I take some everyday. A non-synthetic one a day multi-vitamin; a one 1mg biotin pill; and a hair, skin, and nail herbal supplement. My grandma tells me to slowly get off of it because it's no substitute for food. I know that supplements are no substitute for food, but the genetically engineered foods these days have little nutrition. It's because of that I take those supplements above. I am doing it for my body and for my hair. Can you give me advice on substitutes? I think substitutes can have a bad effect in the long run, but what's the best way to have a healthy hair and body. Thanks guys.
Vitamins are probably good for you as a supplement rather than a substitute. If your taking vitamins to make up for eating crap food, then that's probably no good. If you're eating right and taking vitamins to enhance your health, unless you're overdosing on them, then you should be OK. Be sure to read up on whatever you're taking. I'm CERTAINLY no expert, but I do know that some things react with other things and can have effects that you might not want. For instance, hemachromatosis or iron-overload disorder destroys the liver and predominates in males. Men hardly need to ever take an iron supplement.
Healthy hair follows a healthy body, of course. While genetically engineered foods are out there, there are also organic choices to be found. Actually, there are some things that I don't think have been screwed up yet. It's a shame that good shelf life has been the goal of plant breeders. I bought some tomatoes the other day and could hardly eat them! But, things like walnuts, pecans, and avacados and some more obscure fruits and vegetables (asparagus, turnips, pomegranates, etc.) haven't had too much hybridizing done. Actually, folks have been genetically engineering plants for thousands of years by natural selection and cross-pollination, but I think you're talking more about when scientists put flounder genes in a tomato so they will be more cold-resistant or something like that.
Even if some things are modified, usually if you stick with whole grain breads, porridge, and such, fresh fruits and vegetables, tree nuts, olive oil, very limited sugars and animal fats, and more fish and lean meats, you should be OK. Although, deep-sea fish like tuna and swordfish contain heavy metals to such an extent that pregnant women are advised not to eat them more than once a week, leading me to believe it might not be best for a guy or anyone else to eat too much of that.
OK, that was a little circuitous.
Ive been taking "Hair, Skin, and Nails" and 400mcg of folic acid everyday. The folic acid makes me sleep much better and the "HSN" makes my hair (in my mind) perfect. I can have extremely dry hair and when i take that at night, I wake up with hair that is extremely soft and shiny without being greasy. I have extremely greasy hair so i have to wash everyday (i dilute the shampoo a lot), so anything that can do that to my hair with adding grease is a godsend!!!!
As long as you use your head and think about what you are putting into your body then you should be fine.
peace
