I wear my hair in a pony tail most of the time, but I need to find a better way to keep it up. What I need is to have it off of my shoulders and my back, like in a bun or something, but I've never tied my hair up in any way besides a ponytail or a braid. Any suggestions or how-to's?
I like the bee-butt bun. I've only worn it once when my girlfriend put it in for me....
It was very comfortable and kept my hair completely off my neck. I plan on learning this for myself and wearing it a lot this summer.
This would be my ideal way to wear my hair. However, I don't have anyone to do it for me. :(
Hi Peg,
Here's a link to Gollan's site and gives step by step guide on Bee Butt Bun.

I hope this helps.

Peg, there are lots of ways to hold hair up but what I have found is that for my hair clips give the most secure hold. My preference is either one strong clip like a Ficcare or two claw clips- those ubiquitous inexpensive plastic pinch-to-open jaws. Ficcare has a bun instruction video on their website but I can't get it to work.
Looking for hairstick bun instructions I stumbled onto a well done page made by Gollan who used to post here. He has his bun secured by elastic which is a really great way to show off the hair instead of the hairtoy if you can get to hold for you with elastic alone. Emphasis away from styling implements is particularly handy if an employer would frown upon what they see as 'girly' hairstyles. We know hairtoys are for anybody with hair but unfortunately not everyone sees it that way.

Buns are PERFECT for the purpose.. a little twisting, rolling around, put a stick in it and you're done! I wore a bun at my wedding, two weeks ago, just with an elegant black stick in it..I like the contrast with the suit.
When I didn't know how to fix the bun with a hairstick, this link resolved my problem, maybe it's useful for you too:

I just twist my hair around and around and around until it looks like a tornado about to strike land, then wrap it around itself, using a plain old hair-tie to secure it. If I had more time this morning, I'd include a pic from my iphoto library; but, I'm running late for work, --- so hope my description is enough!

I sure hope that dont damage the hair doing that and it sounds painful !

I suggest a basic bun. They may look daunting and elaborate to a first-timer, but a simple bun is really easy to do, and, if made tightly enough, will stay put all day (not that buns feel tight, if you make them right).
The technique I know involves first dampening your hair a bit, though it can be done on dry hair. Make sure your hair is detangled, then grab it with your hand as though you're making a ponytail. Now, hold the base of the ponytail with one hand and start twisting the hair in the air with another hand. You can hold the hair in any direction as you twist it; I've found that the direction you hold affects the angle the bun will be at. Once you twist your hair (and do it forcefully, but not too tightly) a bit, it will naturally fall back against your head in a sort of nautilus shell shape, or a croissant shape, I guess (it's a bun, after all). At this point, keep twisting, but now direct the hair in a circle around the hair that's lying against your head, until you run out of hair. Make sure you twist the hair so that it follows a path underneath the croissant. Once you're out of hair, just hold the bun with your hand and put a hair tie around the base of the bun, and it'll hold secure if you made it right.
Another suggestion is pigtail braids, if you're bored with a regular braid. Go Viking for a day. :P
