Hi everyone. Congrats to everyone on their updates - I have been checking in but have not had the time to post.
My nine month mark is in two days and my ends were starting to feel very dry and I noticed a few splits. I have been hearing from a number of people that maintenance trims can encourage healthy growth. I was weary of these as I am terified to lose any length.
Eventually I decided, however, to give it a try. No harm in trying right? I went to a newly opened salon close to where I work and explained what I wanted to the stylist. She recommened that I just 'tip' the ends. I said that I do not want more than 1cm cut - she said it would be even less than that.
She didn't lie. She cut about half a centimetre all round. She asked if I wanted my hair 'texturised' - she explained it would lie better and would not remove much length.
I am so happy with the results. My hair feels so much healthier and actually looks longer than before the cut. I am definately going to go for 3 monthly trims - but only with this woman.
Anyway - sorry about the length - I know I'm still a 'wannabe' but I thought I'd post my experience.
Oh yes - almost forgot - she told me to stop using Pantene. She recommended Redken for men. Any experiences with it?
They're a good idea. I know that NOT trimming makes things faster, but under the logic of say, a dusting trim every few months, that adds up to like MAYBE 1" a year trimmed off. A worthy sacrifice for muuuch healthier hair if you ask me. Oils and conditioners are great but can only do so much!
Actually it would end up being alot more than 1" after a year. Majority of salons cannot cut under 1cm because its obviously not easy and 2.5 cm is one inch. so going for two trims you have a good inch gone. BUT depending on how patient you are and how easily your hair splits you should consider a trim unless your hair is fine. Always think it through because they do set you back quite a bit.
Well you confused me a little talking in cm because in the real world you'd use inches but okay, 1cm is less then half an inch, so get 1cm taken off lets say 4 times a year and thats 4cm, yes over an inch but not drastically.
To be honest, I think it's worth it. Whether someone admits it or not, all hair splits and split end ridden hair looks bad when it grows for too long without any kind of help.
Sorry to keep tacking on -- this board doesn't let me edit my old posts --
Where did you hear that salons can't trim 1cm anyway? I just realized, tons of people go in salons and get "dusting" trims. They can trim it just like you can at home. Sure it takes more precision but still.
They can but its not always easy...not for my salon atleast...last trim she went like 2cm, it was horrible. But yeah if your hair is long enough do it yourself for sure.
And okay, who said you had to go to a salon? Trimming 1/4" yourself isn't terribly hard, if you have someone to help you with the back. It's really not hard to trim that little dusting yourself/with help in the back without going to a salon , assuming you have the correct scissors.
Hi Kyle, It looks like you found a good stylist who knows her shit, definitely keep going to her like you commented. I know most of us go on and on about "don't trim" but if it makes it bareable for you and your happy with the results thats all that matter.
Happy growing
Kevin
Congrats to you for being able to find a stylist such as this. (This is not the "usual" ending result story.) Glad you got what you wanted. I "think" that a trim like this is sometimes refered to as a "dusting."
Best of luck to you in future long hair growth.
Sounds like you got the perfect stylist to work with, Kyle! And as far as Redken products go, they make some very EXCELLENT shampoos, conditioners, & soaps, --- they are just the right acid/alcheline balance for hair & skin. I don't remember why I ever switched to another company's product... price, maybe (Redken can be very expensive)?
The one thing I've never heard of, though, is "texturinsing".
Anyway, congrats on having such a good first trimming experience!
