Hello, just wanted to say I've been reading this site for about 5 months now, and I enjoy seeing the process of others growing their hair out, and the effort they put into it, for some reason I enjoy that. But I think the most interesting thing is the support you give each other and the way you share tips and all that. Anyway I thought it was a good time to stop lurking here.
Ive been growing my hair since November 06' from about an inch. I live in the Caribbean and have really curly hair. So, not only people are a little less fond towards long hair, but ill have to wait more for it to grow.
Here's the most recent Pic of my hair Id post more soon, right now Im about to go to bed, its been a long day.
Welcome and thanks for posting the photos of your progress so far. Yes, you will have to wait longer to see length with curly hair. But in the end it will look superb. Even now it is looking great. Good luck to you as you continue your journey.
Hi Nelo, You have very nice uniquely curly hair. Will be nice to see when it's "shoulder length or longer". peace, jonalbear
Yeah, id really like to see it too. I already have half a year and its really shorter than what its supossed to be. But I'll hang on, I'm not going back to short hair.
Hey there, Nelo. Welcome
Your hair looks great already. Hang in there and keep those curls growing.
P.S Which part of the Caribbean do you reside in?
Thanks, I live in the Dominican Republic.
Hey. I'm actually from the Caribbean too, and I also have extremely curly hair (coincidences, coincidences). I live in Dominica. What island are you from?
The reason I'm asking is because of your comment about Caribbean people being "a little less fond towards long hair," which is inconsistent with what I've seen in a number of islands, including my own. That said, this tolerance usually extends to a specific type of long hair, specifically to long hair in a "masculine" style, be it dreadlocks, cornrows/braids, an afro, or a ponytail. Unless one has dreadlocks, it's generally looked down upon to have hair down, although this varies from person to person; I know lots of girls that just love running their fingers through long hair, including my own, when it's down. So, basically, long hair generally isn't frowned-upon in the Caribbean islands I'm familiar with, but I admit I only know people from a couple islands and that a like or dislike of long hair is ultimately an individual decision.
Also, just out of curiosity, do you straighten your hair at all, or is it just wet? The top layers look pretty straight.
Peace
I live in the Dominican Republic.
Here people are a little less tolerant towards afros than braids or dreadlocks, even though those two are less popular. But among all of them a ponytail is the most accepted, it's pretty stupid really since most people here have really frizzy hair.
I don't really know much about other islands since I've only been to Puerto Rico, and it was a long time ago.
Yes, it was actually wet at the time I took that picture, since it was my first post I thought it would be better to post my most recent pic. About the straightening, I used a straightening iron once on my hair, but it just wasn't for me, I actually ended up damaging my hair a little bit. I actually started to let it grow from before November, but then I decided to start over. I did get it relaxed some time ago, and I'm thinking about doing it again, at least until its longer.
Btw, your hair looks awesome.
Hi Nelo,
Welcome to the hyperboard, I am so glad you have decided to "un-lurk" and are sharing your picture with us. Your hair is awesome, don't worry about the fact that curly hair takes longer to grow, rest assured that the journey is well worth it. Your hair can only get better the longer you grow it. We have a number of "curlies" here who have great heads of hair.
Keep it growing,
David
What part of the Caribbean are you from? I've never been there; but my brother & sister-in-law have, and all they could do was rave about how GORGEOUS all the islands they visisted were!
Your hair is coming along nicely! How long do you want to grow it? Well, you've found the right place to help you along on the longhair journey, --- and again, WELCOME!!!
