Well just think it's the official start of summer over in the USA and the start of the official driving season. The weekend the interstates get clogged up and everyone going to the lake or seeing granny. We always love it over there as the petrol price always goes up over here.
It's a holiday weekend here but I'm staying home.
Cheers,
John.B
Me too!
I march in the parade down in Ct asI am a veteran-which is a long drive down
Hi John,
We had our holiday last weekend (Victoria Day) but it has DEFINITELY turned very summer-like today in Nova Scotia, over 30 degrees Celsius today, or high 80's Fahrenheit. Also, you couldn't be more correct about gas prices, they jacked ours up a week ago, in time for OUR holiday weekend in Canada!
Cheers,
David
And I'm staying home as well. It's a madhouse out there!
Justin~
Thank you, Dr. B., for posting . . .
Ironic, ain't it? A holiday to commemorate our WAR DEAD and we associate it with the start of the vacation season . . . interesting, isn't it?
My own father, recently deceased, fought in WW II. He was in the 5th Air Force. Stationed in Fukuoaka, he was among the communications officers who transmitted in Navajo, a real stumper that our THEN sworn enemies, the Japanese, could never decipher.
Yeah, yeah, summer's here. My family'd be opening our former summer escape hatch, the Havens House, on Madison Street in Sag Harbor, Long Island. Built in 1743, it was originally the H.Q. of privateer Capt'n. Rich'd Havens. F.Y.I., privateers were gov't. bank-rolled PIRATES (gasp!) who were wooed over, so to say, to work for the fiercely defiant as-yet-unindependent Colonies to inform us of which seaports the evil Red Coats were going to next attack, pillage, plunder, and burn.
Sag Harbor, which I encourage any down-state New Yorkers to hit as one of your summer vacation stops, was the hub of the whaling industry, back in the seafaring days of yore. Much of the historic import OF Sag Harbor has to do with its glory days as such. For instance, you'll find whale motifs on the weather cocks of homes there, not roosters.
So, men and women of the hyperboard, there ya have it! Sag Harbor's not just a clothing line, it's an old whaling capitol on Long Island that makes a wonderful little vacation spot for the whole family.
Best for the summer season,
Quenyan (+:-)}
Yeah, I was crazy enough to join in on a quick beach trip with friends this weekend. Got back late last night by means of $3.25/gallon gasoline! The traffic wasn't too bad though except on the two-lane roads near the coast (Gulf of Mexico).
Hi John,
Your right in spite of high gas prices everyone will be out driving somewhere. Friday night when I went to work the highway was JAMMED luckily going in the opposite direction . Myself I am WORKING the whole weekend as we are short staffed.
It is odd how a holiday meant to honor the was dead turned into a party weekend that kicks off the summer season.
Kevin
We are going to the beach for the day, but just one of the local beaches that strictly speaking is on the Potomac river and not really the sea.
