Hey everyone! I was lurking around again and saw the post from Swamphell at http://mlhh.org/messages/184961.html with a really cool pic of David Beckham and a really high half-tail. That inspired me to try a half-tail. I tried it a few times during the end of the awkward stage (I'm a few weeks shy of the four year mark now).
However... my attempts at a half-tail have not gone that well. How high is a half-tail supposed to go? How much hair do you put in it? What kind of hair elastic do you use?
I have some really small hair elastics that only need to be wrapped twice to be snug. If I pull all the hair from the bangs and the sides (so the wind won't blow as much hair into my face), then the tail is quite low. If I tie it higher, not all the hair from the sides seems to get in. I can't seem to get it as high as David Beckham had his, but my hair is longer - not sure if that makes a difference. Any tips or pics would be greatly appreciated! I think I may have just found a new hairstyle so I don't always have to go out in a full (low) ponytail or just let my hair down.
Thanks! :)
PS: Below is another pic of David Beckham with that half-tail. Unfortunately I can't find any pics of him showing the back of his head with a half-tail.
I forgot to say... in my attempts at a half-tail quite often the hair elastic gets totally tangled up with a few strands of hair. Sometimes when I try to tie the half-tail, I can't help but grab some lower hairs so that there's too much hair in the half-tail and very little below. And finally, sometimes it just turns out looking like a mullet gone bad. Sorry, no pics. I will take some when I get a decent looking half-tail.
About the Beckham pic - as far as I know, he's actually wearing two half-tails at once: one is tied high at the top, using mainly his bangs, and the lower tail, which is about midway on the back of his head, uses the sides of his hair.
For a regular half-tail style, the hair is usually tied off in a mid-to-low position - depending on how long one's hair is, it can even be tied off as low as the nape where a regular ponytail is usually secured. But high half-tails certainly exist, and if your hair doesn't all fit, your hair must not yet be long enough. Try one between the middle and high area of the back of your head, but don't pull too tight.
And, yes, those small hair ties are good for half-tails. I use those as well. Also very useful are small hair clips/claws, but you might find them "girly." They're a lot easier to put on and off than hair ties, though.
Peace
Ah. I didn't look properly at who was posting this. :P Your hair's definitely long enough for any kind of halftail. I'm not sure why it's giving you a problem.
About the hair getting tangled - the hair clips actually pretty much stop that from happening. Buy a tiny one in black and try it out - you might like them.
If they're not up your alley, just be very careful not to get loose strands of hair in the tail; this can cause massive tangles when you undo the tail. I once had to cut some hair off off a hair tie because of this.
Peace
Thanks man! I think you're right about David Beckham using TWO half tails. That would probably do the trick for me. I'll try that when I get back or after I wash my hair this afternoon.
Part of the problem might be that my hair is thin, fine and stringy and looks flat. The single half tail I'm wearing as I type this looks good - my hair looks a bit longer and fuller not to mention funkier (which can be good at times). It lets me show the real length of my hair (it looks much shorter in a full ponytail).
Well being a brit he's hardly an inspirational longhair as he has a buzz cut now rofl!!!

Yes, I know... but he changes his hair styles as often as most people change their clothes! ;) At least he had it long (longish) for a while and hopefully inspired some guys to grow their hair long (and continue to grow it, unlike David Beckham himself).
Still, I like his half-tail, even if it was rather short and he didn't keep it for that long of a time.
