Hi,
I have been growing my hair from last 8 months(from a 1/2" buzz cut). Now it's about 5", but my hair seemed to have stopped growing, it's been around the same length for the past month. I had my hair straightened(BAD IDEA!!) about 6 weeks back. I was curious to know is that what is effecting my hair growth? Or is it just my imagination. Any advice would be really appreciated?
Thanks
Marcel
Hey Marcel,
Welcome to the hyperboard! No, it's not your imagination. What's actually affecting your hair growth could very WELL be the straightening (chemical) process. What you're used to in regular (curly) growth may SEEM to be slowed by the treatment. If you were to STOP treating your hair with "straighteners", you will then see an improvement in hair acceleration. Take it from me. I have had (curly-haired) friends who have done the same thing and have said the same exact thing. Relax. Let Mother Nature take Her own course. You'll see increased hair growth.
Yours in longhaired camaraderie,
Quenyan (+:-)}
Hi Marcel,
First of all, I would like to extend a heartfelt welcome to you, the hyperboard is a community like no other and I am glad you have found us. Straightening, especially chemical straightening, can be very damaging to hair, and I am glad for you that you have stopped. I experienced a period of near zero growth myself for close to 8 months while I was growing my hair, due to daily use of straightening irons, as the ends were breaking off, making it appear that my hair was not growing at all. I stopped last September, and my growth rate has improved, as the damage slowly grows out.
Don't worry that your hair seems to have stopped growing. Also, one month is FAR too short a period to determine if you are indeed experiencing a growth slowdown, as hair grows in cycles. Most of the damage in your case is probably on the ends, and as hair grows from the roots, it will never stop growing entirely. If you are experiencing a lot of split ends, you may wish to consider a SLIGHT trim, from someone you trust, to target only the damaged hairs.
Hope this helps,
David

- This is a very inspirational message from someone who is in / has been in a similar situation as me.
I posted a message a while back about my hair being destroyed due to straightening for about a year, nearly each day (only some of that time i used chemical heat protection spray).
I think that only now am I starting to experience the growth of my hair without the hinderance of splits snapping off (although there are the odd few strands here and there, that I snip off myself).
I got my hair straightened by an well known hair stylist and he used a straightening iron and some fixing balm I guess. I really appreciate your advice, and will see to it that I don't get my hair straightened anymore. This would be the first and the last time. I don't see any split ends or damage on my hair yet.
