Do you put it up in a pony or just detangle it in the morning? I have curly hair that I'm growing out, and every morning I have to yank at it and basically pull it out to make it look decent...
I also have curly hair that tends to knot easily. I have found that pulling it all up into a high (so I am not laying on a bump ) braid or bun works well for sleeping.
Hope this helps.
I usually pull it up into a tail. Keeps it from getting a bit out of control...
I find that if I braid before going to bed it isn't tangled in the morning.
Unlike most here, I find a ponytail at least as much of a pain as detangling, prbably more so. But that's MY hair...
I wash at night, detangle in the morning. Your mileage may vary depending upon your hair and it's length.

The best combination I've found is to gather your hair at the side of your head at the hollow just behind your ear. Start a somewhat loose braid at this point. Braid your hair, finishing with a single tie at the end.

Sometimes I set my hair on rollers before I go to bed. There are many nice styles you can have with roller sets. My hair is a few inches past my shoulders. I would suggest that you try setting your hair on rollers, before bedtime. After you have set your hair on rollers, wear a net to keep the rollers in place. If you have not set your hair before have a friend help you the first time. Good luck !!
I usually put my hair in a ponytail with two bands: One at my head and the other toward the end of my hair. I take them out in the morning and have no problem brushing through it.
I would braid it if I could...it's funny, I've had long hair all my life, but I can't braid very well. When I try, it looks more like a sloppy knot! I used to be amazed at one of my girlfriends who had hair down to her butt, and she could whip her hair into a nice, tight braid in seconds! I wish I could.
So if you're not a good braider, try the two hairbands.
