Here is an image of a strand of my hair. It is magnified 200 times. You can see the scales of the cuticle on the surface. It looks healthy with little to no damage. I used a canon powershot camera held up to the eyepiece of my microscope.

Hi Jonalbear, my hair ties into a ponytail about 40 inches long. My longest measured shed strand was 44 7/8" long. I saved it.

That's interesting. Maybe someday if I find a microscope I can see my strand like that. It is healthy and no wonder usually if you have really long hair it's gonna be healthy to surive for so long ;)
Wow, that is amazing! About how far down the strand was this photo taken?
About mid point. The hair was maybe 18 inches long.
