In Australia there are a couple of Cable providers, but the biggest (distribution and channels-wise) is undoubtedly FOXTEL.
Now on Foxtel we have 5 music channels: V, V2, MusicMax, MTV Australia, VH1.
The first 3 are the most homegrown and luckily Channel V had an AWESOME metal show called "The Heavy Shift" on for about 3 years, which was cancelled in late 2002.
In fact it was one of the early reasons for why I grew my hair in the first place. Perhpas it was the combination of every (or most :) song featuring music I loved along with the hair that I just thought looked so damn cool, but it definitely provided me with inspiration and encouragement to grow my hair long the first time in early 2001 as well as in introducing me to a whole bunch of metal bands that I hadn't heard of before.
Then in late 2002 without and explanation it was cancelled!
BOOOOOOOOO!
Last year MTV started showing the new Headbanger's Ball, but it was on infrequently and to be honest I wasn't that impressed with their selection.
(Another cool thing about the Heavy Shift show was that they would place old school and/or classic metal clips (e.g. Iron Maiden, Slayer) in between the newer stuff and generally was quite diverse)
But thankfully the powers that be at V have decided to bring it back with a show known at the moment as "Metal on V"
One word baby: Yes!!!
I'm not from Australia but I felt the urge to say that
Yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
\m/
I like that video, lucky you :)
Unfortunately almost none of the channels I get have anything other than pop or rap *shudders*.
I will agree with you that music channels have gone downhill. They are almost all filled with rap (with a silent c)and hip hop. I was watching clips of the download festival not long ago and I have say I was very dissapointed. Yes there were 1 or 2 bands that were shown on tv which were good but most of the bands that were shown were emo. I absolutely detest emo and download is supposed to be englands greatest festival for metal. There is no such thing as a pure metal fest in my country :(
Hey, Dean, Quenyan here!
I'm glad to hear that you Oz-dwellers are gettin' your daily fill of metal; we've had Jamie Josta of HATEBREED hosting the new "Headbangers' Ball" on MTV-2 (f.y.i. he's missing one of his thumbs BEKAWZ some evil speed freak bit it off years ago in a fight at a hardcore matinee at the sadly defunct albeit broken-down punk and indie rock venue, C.B.G.B.'s . . . and, for an additinal three thousand dollars, what does C.B.G.B.'s and O.M.F.U.G. actually stand for?), and then Rob Zombie took the reins. A cool East Indian metal chick from Queens, NY, Mistress Juliya, has been our lovely hostess on MTV's big competitor from Canada now relocated to NYC, FUSE, with her own show, "Uranium", for a few years, but, duuuuude! They tend to re-run and re-run it with not a lot of new broadcasts. What's WITH that?
Anway, Dean, keep us apprised of all metal developments as well as all other extreme music on your shores (edit in soundbyte of thousands of cheering fans here)! Keep rockin' out!
Musically yours,
Quenyan (+:-)}
Quenyan, my friend!
Do you also like Hatebreed? I love it! Yes, there's plenty of anger but I think the music is basically hopeful. Take bad life circumstances and turn them around!!
Jason
Yes, my double-Dutch-braided bruh, yes! I DO like 'em. Too bad that they lost their (?) to suicide (k)not too long ago. Sad. Had he addressed his depression w/t appropriate treatment. . . I, too, have struggled w/ unipolar depression, and with hypomania, and with a purely cerebral, paralyzing form of O.C.D. in which cyclical thinking kinda prevents one from achieving anything except, well, just thinking about stuff as opposed to doing repetitive tasks.
So, Jason you're darn tootin' right I like HATEBREED! Aaaaand, many another band who plays extreme music, truly too numerous to mention. I think that all forms of emotional expression in music ARE HEALTHY, as well as expressing one's darker side in the literary arena, too. Dean Koontz once said that if he weren't a novelist, he'd probably be a serial killer. He was just kidding, of course, but many a truth has been spoken in jest.
Speaking of anger, Jason, BAD BRAINS have some excellent songs that traffic in that emotion; "Right Brigade" springs to mind. However, they are also renowned for some peaceful, calming melodies, too, a la reggae. And their latest CD, "Build a Nation", has just received five stars (!) from the metal magazine, REVOLVER. Seen? Thanks for posting, Jason.
I and I never gonna go astray,
Quenyan (+:-)}
