Just wondering -- what's everyone's opposition to layering around here?
I agree it should never be overdone, but layering can have huge benefits. Long, lank all one length hair is nice to look at, but doesn't flatter the face or have much particular "style" to it.
Now if you don't care about that sort of thing, fine, but it's also a solution to tame thick, wild hair. Layering thins it down considerably and removes a lot of bulk. All one length is nice but layers can help to reduce bulk and make the hair more stylish.
Sorry if I'm ranting, just my opinion and curious to see people's opinions. What's wrong w/ layers?
There's nothing wrong with it. And if you like it, you should try it. Despite all that, usually people want more bulk and thinning hair is not so appealing to most of those wanting to grow their hair out. Of course, most women I know have their hair layered saying it brings more volume (I Don't see the truth in that)
Also, there are many styles with all one length hair ;) And it doesnt' flatten the face unless it's really fine or short.
Putting layers into the hair definatly creates more volume.
Have one length straight hair makes the hair very flat, unless your blessed with incredibly thick(or even cursed) with frizzy hair.
Layers produce....well layers which makes something more volumous, just look at steps.
Plus layers make the hair less lank and make it angle towards the face a little more and give it some interest.
As long as the layers are below the chin or longer they'll still reach the hairtie.
Nothing wrong with layers.
To be honest one length hair is for little girls. When you see an older woman or man with one length hair it doesn't look very flattering at all.
Layers can create a style to the hair, all you are doing is cutting some of the hair shorter on your head.
You can have a whole range of styles, so it's cool.
I know you're biased-as we all are essentially, as hair growing is a subjective aesthetic-towards being pro-layering because you are a hairdresser/stylist, but I still think there's a line and by saying that "To be honest one length hair is for little girls" I think you are crossing said line.
To make my point clear, I am sure that many of our older members here on the hyperboard found it offensive when you said that "When you see an older woman or man with one length hair it doesn't look very flattering at all", yet that is still fine as it just your opinion and not an insult like the 'little girls' comment was.
Have you never noticed Jasons magnificent one length long hair? Perhaps take a look in links at his site. "To be honest."
Nothing is wrong with layers if you want and like that look. Actually, I've seen some layer cuts that look great, men and women. I've also seen some not so good. It seems layers work great with straighter hair.
The downside is that if you find you don't like them, it takes a while to grow back, and they can also make it harder to keep all the hair in a hair tie.
The whole point I think with growing hair is to arrive at something you like. If that's a layer style, then more power to ya.
kdm31091,
Is the "31091" your zip code or what? If it's your zip code, then we're close neighbors.
Sorry...my birthday--March 10, 1991

thats what my goal is. I am going to grow my hair about 6 more months and layer my hair. its soooo cool in my opinion!!
Angel. Good question. You aren't ranting. Layering is fine. Especially when the contours of someone's face are enhanced BY such "shaping". Usually, though, it's best if done when shoulder length, but no longer than that. After all, just look at the "teeth" on a pair of layering scissors; ie. long, short, long, short, ad infinitum. I, too, have had my (then) shoulder length locks layered. That was in the remote past, though! LOL! Now, as I've mentioned many times before, my current goal is to achieve hair to my waist (or belt, which would be slightly longer). Thanks for posting, Angel. Take it away . . .
Yours in longhaired camaraderie,
Quenyan (+:-)}
