I've been growing my hair out for about 5 months now, and I wanted to start a list of the "milestones" (or things that you notice) while growing out your hair.. I'm not too far yet, probably only around 4-5 inches, but I'd like to make a list of things I've noticed while growing it out and maybe other members that are further along can add to the list.. That way people who are having troubles in the awkward stage can look foward to hitting a new "milestone".. Just something to make it easier, to know that you ARE progressing.. =)
here's what I've noticed so far:
* Starts to get longer than you ever let it get without getting a hair cut (well, since you've worn it at your previous length)
* You can no longer spike it or comb it in the manner that you used to
* Somebody mentions your hair length (gets annoying after a while =)
* You can feel a lot more hair around your ears
* You can SEE a peice of your own hair without a mirror! (this one really excited me.. lol, I still remember when I saw a hair for the first time)
* Your hair starts to blow around in the wind (again, can be annoying, but exciting nonetheless the first time!)
* Your hair starts to obstruct your vision and/or pokes you in eye (ditto)
.. And the following is a list of things that I EXPECT to happen, but haven't personally had happen yet.. I'd appriciate it if some real longhairs could help tidy up / fill in this part!
* Your hair starts to get in the way of your shirt when you put it on (this may or not happen this soon, depends on whether or not you cut the back of your hair, or just let it grow the whole time..)
* You are able to tuck some of your hair behind your ears
* You are able to tie your hair in a pony tail
* You are able to tie your front hairs into the pony tail as well
* You are able to braid your hair
* Somebody mentions how much they LIKE your hair
Okay, you likes? Sorry for the second half being lame, but I haven't experienced any of these yet, so they probably aren't too accurate. BTW, I've already explained to my mom that I'm growing my hair out, and she says to me the other day- "So what are we going to do about your hair before school starts?" I said "Eh.. We aren't going to do anything.. I'm letting it grow out, remember?" "You HAVE to do something before take your pictures!! You cant have your pictures like THAT!!".. LOL, I got a kick out of it.. first time my parents rebelled against my hair. I know it wont be a problem with them though, they'll just have to shut up and accept it. LOL! But I dont get it.. I thought my hair looked pretty good where it's at now.. I'm not having too many "awkward stage problems".. But I have to do a lot to get it to stay where I want it to without looking crusty or slicked.. (have to use quite a bit of moose, a blow dryer and a tiny bit of gell to make the tips more defined.. etc.. etc.. Maybe I'll go in detail later if anyone wants me to.. :P anyway.. Hope this posts helps someone!

I could never get through the awkward stage but i remember very well those milestones you mentioned (not the second half). I can't wait for them to happen again now that i am growing my hair again.
Here are three more....
First time you find a hair in your food and realize you can't blame the cook or waiter, because the other end of it is attached to your head!
First time film comes back from the processor and there's a light brown swath across a print, and you realize it was your hair, blown there by the wind.
First time you look in the mirror and realize for the first time in your life, you are attractive!
And some more (11+ months):
Have to hold your hair aside while brushing teeth, shaving.
Find out for the first time in your life that your hair is slightly wavy!
Think nothing is happening, but about every week or two, delightedly notice your hair is falling differently, touching your collar, shoulder, etc.
Realize you've accumulated more hair stuff than your wife/partner!
How about:
The first time you put on a t-shirt and have to do the back-of-the neck flip.
The first time you realize it's more comfortable to let your hair hang off the back of the chair.
The first time you get your hair caught in the car door.
The first time you get "ma'amed".
The first time you can tie a knot under your chin.
The first time you can pinch your hair in your armpit.
The first time your housemate complains about all the extra hair clogging the vacuum.
Lately I've been hearing alot that my hair and beard is making me look too old...that I would look younger if I got a haircut and shaved.
Beware...this is nothing more than an attempt by others to "shame" one into cutting their hair.
What I do notice is that I get an awful lot of looks from short-haired guys. I think it is because they themselves desire long hair...wondering what it would be like to have it.
This is the longest I have ever had my hair...and I want it even longer.
PS: If anyone is interested...here is a link to my home site.
What about this daring one:
1st time that you could pull your hair from the back, tuck it under your armpits and pull it to the front of your lap ;)
That's my *final* milestone :))) Or longer!!!
How about when you first realize that more women looking at you and smiling or saying hello.
The first time you feel your hair brush against your forearm.
The first time you sit down in shorts and feel your hair brush against your thigh!
I'm still waiting for those last two :)
I remember that milestone from when I was a child. I pulled down hard on a lock of my hair and looked up hard and it was difficult to see the lock of hair over my forehead--but I could see it for the first time!
I also remember noticing that I could feel my hair slide down the back of my neck when I look up.
More milestones to add ...
when your hair reaches the shoulders.
when I have to move my back to free my hair before I can move my head.
when your hair is long enough to tie all of it into a pony tail.
when your hair is long enough to get caught in your pants when getting dressed.
when your hair can hit the ceiling when throwing your hair back by standing up fast.
when you can sit on your hair if you lean your head back.
when you can sit on your hair without having to lean your head back.
when it stops getting longer (reaches the maximum length).
