Hey guys,
I have grown my hair out some a few times over the past few years but I could never get past the "awkward stage"..... you know where your hair is long but not quite long enough to do anything with and it just looks like a bush all the time LOL......... well I have decided to start letting it grow out again. I would really like to have my hair about shoulder length, or maybe just a tad longer and an even length all around. Are there any words of wisdom or support some you guys can give me to inspire to me to stick with this goal?
Thanks,
David
Hi, i recently found this message board and i am very surprised to know that so many people have the same problems with hair as myself. Knowing that a lot of other people, especially guys with thick wavy hair, like myself, have a hard time growing their hair long gives me strenght to do it. I'm just like you, i always wanted to grow my hair long, very long, but i could never get through the awkward stage. Every time i had a hair cut i felt that something was wrong, like a piece of me was taken away... but anyway, i am determined to let it grow to terminal length this time, let's just hope the awkward stage will be merciful with me this time.
Cheers
The awkward stage can be a bit rough for anyone. The trick is tenacity (not to mention moral support from the people on this board).
You didn't mention age, so I don't know if you are a professional or a student. Depending upon where you are, bandanas (either as a headband or full cover) can be a great controller/cover for the "really wild" hairs in the interim moments.
Don't hesitate to try for a pony tail, even if it has to be a little higher (or shorter) that you would like, to start getting control over the main portion. The side hairs (my trouble spot) can the be tucked up under the pulled back hairs.
If all else fails, a little hair control stuff (pommade, gel, etc.) can get you over the more difficult transition issues.
Good luck. Don't stop this time.
Another way to control the side hair- use a couple of the little 'banana' clips. They don't damage the hair and hold the hair that doesn't reach the ponytail.
I forgot to mention my website (www.necksbydavid.com) so you guys can see my picture. As you can see, my hair is pretty short at the moment, although it has grown maybe 1/4 inch since that picture was taken....... so I guess you can see I have quite a way to go before I have my hair anywhere close to the length that it has been in the past. Once I had a mullet cut which actually didn't look too bad and when I had that, my hair in the back was just below shoulder length. I know I wouldn't have a problem growing that back out, but I really would like to try an all over even length.
Also can someone please explain to me, or show me a picture of what an "undercut" is? I saw that mentioned several times on this board, but I have no clue? Thanks, David
Oh yeah, someone wanted to know my age.... I am 30 years old..... I also work in a semi-professional work evironment. We have one guy who has particularly long hair, so it shouldn't be a problem to let my hair grow out where I work.... I just know it's gonna be hell getting there LOL.
An undercut is when you buzzcut the sides and back of your head and
let the long hair on top hang down over it. There are varying degrees
or extremes of undercuts up to just a long mohawk I guess. My undercut is just about 2" on the back of my neck and 1" on the sides.
When my hair is down its not even noticable. When my hair is in a ponytail then you can notice it a little bit. For me it makes me look
a lot neater since I had a lot of curly frizzys around the edges.
You don't touch or cut your long hair with an undercut.
BTW how do you see your necklaces at your site? Besides the one you're wearing that is.

Ok I'm beginning to understand what an undercut is now. Thanks, you asked my necklaces.... so far I don't have any product listings up at my site. I am still working on those and don't plan on adding them to the site for at least a few more months. I will however very soon have some other sections coming up for viewing on my site. Thanks for asking :-)
David,
I am growing my hair out for the first time. I, too, want it all the same length and about shoulder length. I found a good stylist at Super Cuts. She is keeping the lower back portion at collar length and only trims the ends each time I go it. That's about every 8 weeks. It seems to be taking a long time to grow. I started last November and it was kinda short. Things are a bit awkward at the moment since I really can't do lots with it.
Hope the suggestion helps.
David
why do you trim every 8 weeks? you don't get split ends that fast, do you? just let it grow and cut it even when it has reached shoulder length (or whatever your goal is), will save you lots of money.
