lately i think i am becoming obsessed with my hair (and sometimes other longhair's too.) I have a big pool and im afraid to go in it for fear of my hair. I cant bring myself to gell it or wear a hat anymore because "its not healthy." Evertime the wind blows it a little i feel i have to brush it. Everytime i look in the mirror i try to see if my hair is a little longer than the last time i looked at it. I am constantly lookin at other people with longer hair than me but still in the awkward stage for "reference points," so i can try to figure out what my hair will look like at a certain stage or how much longer i have left. I was wondering if anybody has had similar experinces when growing there hair or if there are any other awkwards out there whoget this too? or am i just being an obsessive weirdo?
been there done that- it might be a bit excessive but i suspect not all that unusual. wanting long hair likely means wanting it ALOT longer than it is. since hair grows so PAINFULLY slow it's easy to get obsessed in how long it isn't instead of concentrating on your progress so far. seeing someone with longer hair only intensifies that. pay less attention to others' hair any concentrate on your progress so far in terms of what it is instead of what it isn't. invest in a shower cap and don't sweat it. i'm a few years past the awkward stages now and obsessing in them only intensifies the frustration of not having reached your 'goal'.
Yea, anytime we overthink something, we can get a bit obsessive. Probably the best thing you could do is spread your thoughts to some of your other interests more (the ones your probably neglecting, anyway). Hair is always with you (and around you). It's one of those nice things in life that don't demand alot of thought and can always be experienced on an emotional level in the background.
I agree with the others. I, too, am a swimmer (laps) and have found the following to be helpful...
- Coat your hair with conditioner (the hair "drinks" the conditioner so it won't take in the chlorine as much).
- Use a silicone swim cap (not as "grabby" as latex).
NOTE: The conditioner in your hair makes it slick, so you may have to adjust the cap occasionally - or it could slip off.
