I saw on a site that said that was inferring that wearing hats can help contribute to your hair falling out. I don't really believe that but it made me wonder if wearing a hat a lot can indeed damage your hair. I hope not. Do any of know??????
Gilee, I was in the Navy for four years when I was much younger and I remember some of the guys would worry about that very problem...well, the few I have been in contact with over the years still have a full head of hair including myself so I would say as you mentioned that it was only an "inference" without much merit!
most definitely they can damage the hair itself, not sure about the falling out part. ANYTHING that rubs against your hair can damage it. Most of the damage hair incurs happens from the friction of your hair rubbing against your pillow case while you sleep(especially if you are a tosser and turner), thus the reason many people use satin or silk pillow cases. If you are wearing a hat on a regular basis, best to make sure its not too tight, try to avoid rough fabrics, and don't lay down with your hat on or do anything that would cause a friction between your hat and your hair. If you really want to be safe sew or glue some satin ribbon inside of the brims of all your hats, that will definitely lessen the damage!
When I had hair down to my waist I would never wear a hat, even when it was ten below zero. Was too nervous that the hat would damage the
hair.
I also had this concern. I have worn caps/hats on many occassion particularly when my hair was wild and out of control. I don't know whether wearing a cap/hat damages all hairs on the head, but I noticed (in my case) that the cap rubs off some of the finer hair along my frontal hairline. Sometimes it cringes it as well.
For a while I noticed that my hair line was receding where the cap hugged most (not fitted tightly). At the time, I couldn't necessarily prove that the cap was causing this recession. 5 months ago, I decided I'd grow my hair out longer. I haven't worn a cap/hat for 4 months. The hair along my frontal hair line has grown back. Last week I decided to wear a cap. When I took it the cap off, I could see where the cap had rubbed the hair on my hairline (in a strait line). If the "Akward phase" isn't tough enough, the cap seems to make it worse. When I was smaller I remember giving what they called "Indian Cabbage Patches". This is a joke where you rub the hair on the forearm in a circle and it forms little knotted beads of hair. If you did it right, it burned, balded, and appeared like a "Cabbage Patch". Similarly, a cap/hat seems to do the same.
