I live in St. Louis, Missouri and I have friends more south, so there are a bunch of redneck like people around here. Anyway, as I was leaving my friend's house, two really redneck looking men point right at me and said to my friend, "You need to shave his head, huh?" The other man was like, "Yeah, shave his damn head."
I didn't realize it was considered THAT long now...wow...but that was my first encounter with long hair haters, ;-( Almost made me feel bad >_>
Its amazing that in the U.S.A., land of the free, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, there are those who feel that they should dictate how the rest of us should live! Granted this is also the land of freedom of speech, but sometime that speech borders on intimidation.
Have a great LONG HAIR day!
Bruce
There is no peace and freedom here. It is all a facade, it always has been. Humans shall never know peace and happiness, so long as humanity continues to exist.
Oh, God, Grant! Lighten up!
It's hard to lighten up here. This community probably wouldn't appreciate the overabundance of joke topics I so carelessly throw about on other message boards... >_>
Bigotry does not care about exact hair length. It only cares that you don't meet up with their "standards."
Just imagine what it must have been like to live in Nazi Germany, --- the pressure to "conform" to say that you're not Jewish while being surrounded by an idiotic blue-eyed blonde "ideal" --- or to be a Black man living in rural Mississippi during the start of the Civil Rights Movement... I can't even begin to imagine the terror those people had to live with. But, it certainly gives us a taste of what should never be allowed to flourish... By just REMAINING a longhair in a redneck environment like that, you are indeed, "fighting the good fight!"
May you walk tall & proud, ignoring those with pea-sized bigotted brains who speak anything bad against your hairlength; and continue to let that wonderful shaggy mane of yours to grow & prosper like the rose!

I wouldn't feel bad at all. Just keep it growing! I'm actually a bit surprised at hearing this. At least around here in GA, a good many of the more redneck-y guys have long hair themselves. I would not even hesitate to say that is is not uncommon at all. That being said, I don't even like to use the term "redneck" at all since it implies stereotyping based on outward appearance and the grouping of a within-varied populace into a classification that may or may not be accurate. But, having said that, I have never had any such experience as you had, and some call this part of GA "Hee-Haw Hell." And, I am known to frequent some venues, veritable "redneck" havens, such as local dirt race tracks and country/western type bars at times with no problems. We were going to this one place one time where we we kidding around wandering if we needed to bring our own knife with us or were they provided at the door. HA!
WHile what you say is true, the people around me are "true" rednecks, or at least obnoxious hoosiers.
I used to live in a pretty bad area, and I've been beaten up because I was white, so I've had experience dealing with things like that, but that was like....6 years ago. To experience it again, albeit on a much less severe level, was still fairly unnerving.
Thats pretty scary though, we don't tend to get that sort of thing over here, just shouts of 'oi hairy man!' from 8 year old kids!! lol
it amazing that so many people hate long hair. I guess everyone wants to look the same....monkey see monkey do.
