Sort of.
A few weeks ago, while tying my hair back into a ponytail, I realized it felt a lot smaller than I had ever realized. I thought there was a lot less hair there than I could remember from before. And it made me start worrying about balding.
I thought about it for a while, and I remembered something. There's always, as far back as I've been growing my hair, been these spots, right above my ears, where my hair just doesn't grow long. I never trim it, cut it, or do anything to it - but when I have a ponytail, it sticks out obnoxiously. Makes me wonder if I've been slowly balding or something?
But on the other hand, my hair doesn't look any different when it's not in a ponytail. I did a little research, and webmd said for women (due to hair length) that you should look for a widening part and a thinning ponytail. Well, my part hasn't gotten any wider, and I haven't changed it recently either. Also, from looking from a mirror at the top of my head, I don't see a bald spot. Furthermore, I don't notice anything different when I'm brushing/combing my hair.
Sorry I don't have pics, but my camera's slightly broken. Also, my hair's down to about my ribcage now, and I've been growing for about 3 1/2 years. I know I'm probably just being paranoid, but I'd just like some input on what I should do, and any other causes of this (that being a thinning ponytail or my paranoia!)
Thanks in advance!
well from your avatar pic it looks like your hair is very healthy and full, your prolly just being paranoid lol
What's everyones facination with balding. Your hair looks fine on your avatar pic, stop worrying above something so stupid.
We get too many posts saying ''am i balding,a hair fell out''!
Annoys me a bit to be honest.
Worrying about balding is NOT something "stupid." Hair loss in men usually starts occurring around age 24 or so, --- and if genetics so dictate, by age 30 the MPB pattern will usually be obvious whether it will just be something as minor as a receding hairline (something I have, for instance); or hair loss that is significantly more than that...
I'm sorry you are annoyed; but, as you get older, if hair loss ever happens to you, don't be surprised if you suddenly find yourself VERY worried, --- and a much more empathetic attitude towards others about their concerns as well. If you are lucky enough to never have to experience any hair loss or balding, then you should be grateful, not critical.

Selfish empathy perhaps. I for one think the post was fine.
Empathy is not a requirement of posting on this board... duh. If you want empathy, put it in the rules?
~JeffL
The rules say to be courteous, Jeff. The General FAQ explains why we don't have specifically what you asked for in the rules....
The rules page gives specifics.... It is intentionally short. Etiquette mavens have written books on behavior in public, and they still haven't covered everything. We won't bore you with a book. Just be polite and act appropriately considering who else is here and why they've come, and you'll do fine.

This is by far a stupid worry for many men. Hardly. For one desiring long hair, the very thought of going bald which "does happen" to many men can be of great concern............especially so if it runs in the family.
So what!
If something annoys you, the solution is ever so easy. Go on to another posting and be not so abrasive to one who has a genuine concern.............."to be honest."
Frankly, DaPs, I find it is YOUR attitude that is "stupid" here, NOT Malendras's concerns at all. Just put yourself in someone else's shoes for once. Remember, down the road, you may be faced with hair loss of your own, you may not think the question is so stupid then, in fact, you might come here seeking guidance and support.
Remember, the purpose of the hyperboard is to support others in their growth of long hair, and any questions they have pertaining to the growth of long hair, including hair loss, which is a VERY real concern of many. Please try to be more careful in your choice of words next time!
David
I agree with David. It is not stupid to be concerned with the problem of balding. It's true that many, especially young guys, may obsess over it a bit to much, but there are plenty of bald men out there, and they all had a full head of hair at some point in their lives. If you can catch the early signs of balding, help can be sought and something can be done about it.
Take care,
Bruce
He is a teenager and is concerned that his hair may be thinning. What if this was happening to you? You certainly would not want rude remarks. You would want some help and support from others here. Treat others as you would want to be treated.

DaPs, You are beginning to annoy ME a bit. He is just worried and wants advice and opinions! No need to be so rude! If you have nothing constructive to say don't say anything. simply ignore the post and respond to another post that doesn't "annoy" you.
Dude! You need to chill bit. We all get annoyed about something but you have to just let it roll off and move on, life is too short to get wound up over little things.

Unless you are balding, I don't even want to hear about balding ok. Something that maybe in my genetic future in about 20 years is something I do not want to think about.
My hair site
Firstly, my avatar pic is a year and a half old. Secondly, I know someone barely older than me who has lost most of his hair, in fact my 50 year old father's hairline is better than his. AND he has long hair, and he's had it for a while. Thirdly, balding runs in my family.
I acknowledged it was a bit paranoid, but seeing as it did exhibit several things webmd.com suggested as signs of hair loss, excuse my concern.
Then why post?
I completely understand your possible paranoia. I've been that way about going bald since my mid-teens. I even attended two seminars on the subject and had my hairline examined by a professional. I've been taking pictures of my hairline for awhile now. You might want to try this because it will be a definitive way of establishing whether any loss occurs.
Try and get us a photo at some point. I think we could give better feedback with one.
I ripped this from a friend's camera, it shows me when my hair was...attacked by a couple of my friends. For some reason, they love doing stuff to it. You can clearly see the shorter hair on the temples there...I'll try to find more somewhere.
As a longhair, his hair means a lot to him, and I can relate.
It's not something stupid, as it's a trivial thing whether you will go bald or not. I'm sure if your hair looked thinner you'd be worried to, if you really care about it.
And the ultimate purpose of this hyperboard is advice and answering questions. As long as it's hair related, it's not a stupid question, even if it's been adressed before.
As for the annoyance part, I've seen you say that about many things, such as "long haired rockers" a couple of months back.

You're probably OK.
That's not at all a place where male pattern baldness would occur. a fading forehead or top would be cause for concern.
Everyone's a bit different as to how to grows, though.
I have found that the "body" of my hair changes quite a bit with changes in humidity, choice of shampoo/conditioner, etc. - have you change anything recently7
No changes from me, but it's been very humid lately. And maybe it's just that I'm taking better care of my hair? The avatar pic is about a year, year and a half old.
Hi malendras,
As far as I can see, your hair looks great, and I can see no thinning from your avatar picture, it looks good and thick to me. There are 2 main areas where hair loss commonly occurs, the first, recession around the temples, and the second, in the crown area of your head.
If you have any concerns at all, I suggest you see a doctor, preferably a dermatologist. The good thing about this is that he can lay your fears to rest once and for all, and I am sure this will be found to be true in your case. Even if there is some early hair loss, he can put you on medication (propecia) which can halt hair loss and reverse it in some cases. It is especially effective in the young and for those who start early, before significant hair loss has occured.
Take care,
David
Man I think you'll be ok as the others have said. The short hairs on your sides are no big deal I have them as well. I used to trim them but now when I tie a tail for work I shoot a bit of hair spray on the sides and lightly pat them down for a neater look. Otherwise I would look like the Dr. Frankenstein.
If your really worried I would agree with David see a Dermatologist.
Take care
Kevin
Hi, Malendras! Don't you worry a bit! Your hair seems so healthy that I am really a bit envious about now (especially your texture) From what I see your hairline must be pretty full (more than an average male) so I suppose you're just being paranoid. Of course, if you're still concerned you can ask a friend to take a pic of your hairline and post it here or ask the doctor (which I doubt is necessary).
I also get very paranoid about balding, that's the only thing that annoys me the most lol sometimes I just look at the mirror and try to imaginatively create more hair in the front.
Hello Malendras,
I think, like an other member said, that ears are not the usual place for balding. And with your wonderful hair... :)
But, I have noticed, the last autumn, that I HAD lost more hair, during 2-3 weeks. And then, I've read, that in autumn and SOMETIMES in spring, we lost a little more hair. Maybe it is your case, althought spring is finished yet.
Don't worry ;)
Bye
Vivien
Thanks for all the kind words everyone, I thought I was just paranoid. It's also that an aquaintence of mine has lost a lot of his long hair in the past 2 years, so it got me thinking and worrying. I'll probably see a doctor about it soon, see what he says, but until then I'll try not to worry.
Thanks again!
