i want to grow out my hair but it is very thick and my ears just stick out in between my long ugly lookin sideburns and the back...when do i put the part behind my ear over my ear so i dont look like i am wearing a hair helmet???
there will be a period 'Awkward Phase' between you hair getting longer and being able to get in a tail when it does not look too good. Suggest shave your sideburns off completely - top of ear. This does look better and it will prevent your ear appearing as an area of white flesh amongst the hair.
When you can get a tail shorter close trimmed sideburns might be OK.
To trim off my sideburns without going to the barber, I put on my glasses and use clippers/scissors to remove everything below the arms. That way they're even.
I also comb my hair back rather than to the side. It takes a bit of gel to hold it there (and I often have hair product failure about mid-afternoong ;-) ) but it keeps the hair at the front from looking too bad.
Just my thoughts ...

I'm not sure whether you're referring to sideburn hair or beard but I'd suggest if it's the first to grow them. The Awkward Phase cna be very annoying to some but it's always to have more hair :P
If you really can't stand it you can always shave it though. Do what you think it's best.
