I was wondering how to identify split ends? I'm not even entirely sure what they are, and online searches haven't brought up much. Thanks.
Split ends are basically hairs that have split into two (or more i'd assume is possible)
Just like this -

I have that problem too...I mean, how can you tell if it's a split-end or just another strand of hair?
Take ONE individual hair. Look at the very end. If it splits in two and looks like an upside-down Y then it has a split end.
You take random samplings of individual hairs look closely and if it splits in two towards the end you have a split end. If in your sampling you find many then you have split ends.

thats easy, look at the ends of individual hairs. If there split into little "forks" of two or more originating from the one strand.
im wondering if split ends means ones hair is doomed or if its just a minor cosmetic blemish...ive neve runderstood the implications of leaving split ends to...well.....split
Make sure you look very closely, I thought i had alot of split ends at one point because i have a group of hairs that curled and were different lengths I guess..and they looked split. But after looking closely at one hair I realized that they were not. I found one a month ago or so..luckily only one and cut it right out.

I have a question ... How can you get split ends
I am not 100% sure but I believe since the ends of your hair can get dry and brittle and since they are over a year in age that they break/split?
This is what the internet has to say:
Similar to skin, hair is made up of layers. The outer layer, or cuticle, consists of dead cells lying on top of one another like tiles on a roof. This protects the middle layer, or cortex, which is composed of long, coiled proteins that make up the bulk of the hair. A split end occurs when the protective cuticle is worn away on the tip of a strand, allowing the fibers of the cortex to unravel and the hair to split lengthwise.

Ohh but how can you wear it away by doing some action Like, what
I have old eyes so its' hard for me to look at the ends of my hairs yet. I guess I'll just have grow to my waist so I can hold them out at arms length!:D Until then, I examine the hairs I lose when combing. If I don't see splits then I feel pretty confident that the ones still attached are ok. If I see a split then perhaps a closer look is in order. But in any case I have to use a magnifing glass (old eyes, remember?)

Thanks for the answers! I guess I'll check the strands that fall out when I am combing/brushing as well.
