I NEED INFORMATION ON HAIR STYLES FROM THE 1970s with pictures.CAN ANYONE HELP? LONG HAIR STYLES FOR MEN
Hello
I am 39 years old, and presently have waist length hair, often tied in a ponytail.
I grew up being a teenager in the 1970's, and from 1970 to 1976 long hair was becomming more than a sign of rebelion, or of being an eccentric or hippie. It was creeping in the work place. In department stores, banks, and at my mom's work place, which was the Big Blue, many male workers had shoulder-length hair. Teenagers, (I was 16 in 1975, tended to have the 'beatles' haircut, that was hair touching the colar, covering the ears. Most parents did not mind. To see a good view of typical 70 s hairstyles, one has to look at mid 70's movies 73-76, and reruns of 70's tv series. For college students, hair was longer, just look at grad pictures exhibited in colleges, to see some business students wearing caps and gowns and shoulder length hair.
On Sunday, July 11, 1976, my mom said six words that sent chills up my spine... Long hair is out of style. As disco became more popular, teenagers started to cut their hair, just enough to expose ear lobes, at first, and started to get blow-dryed do's. I went along on August 18, 1976, and felt castrated, after having my shoulder lenght hair cut off to a normal haircut for a city boy. In 1977, after another haircut, I let it grow, only trimming the ends, and my hair got longer as people started to cut their hair shorter. In 1980, lenghts went from earlobes to mid ear, and by 1983 around the ears "normal business haircut". Being faithful to my taste for long hair, I have the same style since 1979, and even when long hair returned to visibility by the late 80's , I still did not cut my hair off with the excuse of having short hair to stand out from the crowd.
Today, at age 38, It is graying a bit, and even receding, however, I am happy with what nature gives me.
Have a nice day,

I would suggest looking through old issues of "After Dark" magazine from 1970-76...you may be able to find them either in bound form or on microfilm at a local library (preferably a college library, because they usually have better collections than public libraries).
"After Dark" was an entertainment and performing arts magazine that published from 1968-1983. The early and mid-1970s issues are the best for what you want. The magazine regularly ran photo studies of models, dancers, and gymnasts, and some of the males featured in these layouts had long hair. Many of the pictures are tasteful nudes. Because of the nudity, you may find bound volumes that are mutilated.
Try August and September 1972 issues, as well as January 1975. The August 1972 issue has pictures of Joe Dallesandro with long hair, as well as one small interesting picture of some man named Richard Kim Milford. September 1972 issue had another picture of Richard, and the January 1975 issue had a nude study of a gymnast named Jason. These men's hairstyles were representative, I think, of the style of the '70s.
Good luck. And remember, if your library doesn't have something, try doing an interlibrary loan.
