The subject of men with long hair and earrings comes up once in a while here, as I've seen from my many sporadic visits to this forum. Last month I made a blog entry on the subject of men with long hair and earrings. A few people read it, and I think EddieG from this forum posted a comment. I'd be interested in what others think about this.
Myself I have 2 small hoop type earrings, 1 in each ear and I'm 34. This has been my style for the last 10 years, though I've been an earring wearer as far back as 20 years ago (starting with 1 earring in my left ear and also experimenting with two or three earrings per ear for a while). I've had sideburns since I was 17, a goatee since 19 (along with a failed attempt at growing long hair somewhere in between those ages). For much of my 20s I had a shaved head or flattop hair cut, but finally did what I wanted to all along and grow my hair really long. It's now been 4 years that I started growing my hair out, so it's been noticeable long for at least 2.5 of those years - that's when I could tie a decent, albeit high, ponytail.
Now that my hair is longer, despite a significant trim in April to get rid of split ends, my small earrings (which are really thicker gage eyebrow rings) are not very visible with my hair down. Below is a recent picture with my hair tied back. I'm thinking of going back to the bigger and bolder silver hoop earrings.
Anyone else have thoughts or opinions on this? Do you think this look suits me (be honest, I can handle it). I'm working on losing weight, so don't mention that. ;) Below is a link to the original blog entry on long hair and earrings on men.

Personally I am not a fan of earrings on guys, but that is a decision each has to make for themselves.
Yes, everyone has their own preferences. We all know there are people who don't like long hair on guys. As for the earrings, I can't imagine myself without them. For me, that would just feel wrong. I feel naked without them. Ever since I was little, I wanted long hair, earrings and facial hair.

For me, it was long hair, facial hair, and blue jeans. In recent years I'd add "bandanna". I would feel naked going out without any of those four things. I go everywhere with them.
I've never yearned for earrings, but they would now be pointless since I always have my hair and big beard down, and they form a complete blanket around my neck. No one ever sees my ears. Nor my neck, even. Not unless the wind blows, but that is temporary.

If it were me, I'd still wear the earrings even if they were only visible once in a while. Everyone has their own "absolute must have" list and you feel naked if you don't have/wear part of it.

I do know the feelings since I have my own "must haves". I guess for many of us here, "long hair" is a must have. [grin]
Enjoy and celebrate your earrings!
Bill
You can wear what you like to be honest.
One tip i would give you is to wear different types of earrings. Don't just have the same ones all of the time, that's just boring :P
DaPs.
Yes, good idea. I used to do that but then I just found it too much of a hassle to change them, so gradually began wearing the same ones for a longer period of time. My current earrings are not easy to close/lock in place so I tend not to take them out. They've been in almost 2 years now! But I agree, it's time for a change.

I had earrings long before I grew my hair out. I started with just one earring, but soon graduated to two, one in each ear. After a while I had five earrings total, two in each ear, and one in the upper ear. I'm back to four, two in each ear, and I'm so used to wearing them now, it would feel like I was naked without them.
I think they go well with short and long hair, and I think I'll keep them in a lot longer than I have long hair for. I'm also a fan of big silver hoops, though mine are actually white gold, since I'm allergic to silver.
Right on, bro! Sounds a lot like me. I too had earrings before long hair. For a while, I also had two earrings in each ear, which I may do again sometime. My current earrings, which are really eyebrow rings are probably surgical steel or stainless steel, but my others are silver and also white gold.
Yeah, I feel naked without earrings too.

I think it's a cool look and I think you should feel free to wear the bigger hoops. I saw a guy with shoulder length hair and big hoops about a month ago in a hardware store. I thought it looked cool. A lot of guys here in S. Cal. just wear diamond studs too. You can vary the look and wear different earrings on different days. Go for it!
Yeah, I think bigger hoops would be a nice change. Any hoop style earring is good with me. I'm not into the diamond studs though, or any stud type earrings. Typically I wear the same earrings for weeks, months or even years - even if they're easy to change (some are not).
I agree, it's a cool look.

I think they look cool, but don't wear any jewelery myself. Not even a watch or wedding ring.. :)
Earrings are the only jewelry that I wear. I used to wear a nice Seiko watch until last year when the band broke, but still haven't fixed it! Not jewelry related, but I'm thinking of getting a tattoo sometime soon.

Well I think the matter is each to his own. But I have 3 in each ear The first I got 20 yrs ago. The second set I just at the start of the summer and the third I just got last week. I wear a gold 10 guage captive bead ring in the lowest hole. A larger diamond stud in the second hole and a smaller diamond stud in the third hole.
Frankly I love guys with longish hair - I've been growing it out lately and since I work alot outside it has really gotten very blond this summer. So I have the longish blond hair, triple earing, tanned look going and love it. Only wish I could find another guy who has long hair and earrings for a mate.

Hmmm, maybe we should talk Charley :-)
I've had both ears pierced since I started growing my hair out (over 7 years ago). I've alwasys loved the looks of long hair and hoop earrings. I'm not really a fan of ear tunnels or studs, but I love hoops, usually ones big enuff that I can feel them moving. I have all sizes from 1/2" to 3". I only wear the big ones when I have my hair down. Sometimes a wear some dangle earings too :-)
Ever since my hair got really long, I found it kind of pointless to wear earrings since my hair covers my ears.
Ofcourse I could wear it in a ponytail :/
My preference for earrings aren't studs nor hoops. Not really sure what they're called but I guess they're inspired by Indian culture. Um, I guess I like earrings that hang. LOL
I wear them very seldom nowadays.
That's why I'm going back to bigger earrings! :P
Although I do wear my hair in a ponytail fairly often as well. I should try those hanging earrings sometime.
I think the thick, gold hoops are great. If I ever get earrings, those will be my choice, too. The look suits you just fine.

Hi Peter,
I have never had earrings myself, and have never cared to try them personally. However, I think these small earrings suit you just fine, and I see no problems going for the larger ones when your hair gets longer.
That being said, I just wanted to say that your hair looks great here, you have an awesome ponytail!
Keep it growing,
David
Thanks David. That picture is from April, just about three months ago. It was the day I got a trim, and a fairly significant one (well, it seemed significant, maybe an inch or 2). Believe it or not, that's 4 years of hair growth and only three trims.
I've worn the small earrings for two years - never taken them out - so I'm ready to go back to the bigger ones. Might be easier to see through the long hair!

I would think hair would catch in earrings and snag.
I've never had that problem... maybe some other styles of earrings are more prone to that, but it's never happened to me.

It's excellent combination, you may want the larger thicker earrings to show through the long hair

For my 40th birthday (I'm 53 now), a good friend and I decided to go have our ears pierced. This decidion was inspired in me, though, by a comment a woman friend of mine made about a month before that b-day... She said the following to me: "With your long hair, I think an earring would look so cool on you!" My reply to her was that I tried that when I was in my early 20s, but didn't like the way an aerring looked on me. With that she said, "Weel, maybe you had an earring on the wrong ear then." When I asked her what she meant by that statement, she went on to explain that most people's faces are not exactly symetrical, --- and that maybe an earring on the other side of my head would look more correct on me... So, I gave piercing my ear one more try, only pierced my right ear this time, instead of the left (which is the one I pierced when I was in my 20s)... and have been happy with the look ever since!

That's great, Ken! Glad you found a way to have an earring in a way you're happy with. I've thought of wearing just one earring in my right ear, and I think I may have a few times when I went clubbing in the village. But, I really look of an earring in both ears. When I first did it, people said it looked gay. I let them think what they wanted since I was just in the process of coming out at that time (I had been out to a few select people for about 5 years prior to that, but not in a big way). At that time, not as many guys had both ears pierced, so it did stand out a bit more than it does now.

I'm glad you have found happiness by moving to the right!
My opinion is that you should do whatever makes you happiest. There is no need to seek mass approval of one's personal tastes, since the people and subcultures you ask can have signficant biases in one direction or the other.
Nevertheless, I love long hair and earrings. It can be such an elegant combination, but it can give more of a hardcore look, at the same time. I'm going to get my ears pierced eventually, and I plan to wear different kinds of earrings. I agree that having one's hair down kind of defeats the purpose of the earrings, but remember that you can push your bangs behind your ears, which will expose your earrings while allowing you to still have your hair loose.
I'll be honest, though - I don't think the earrings go so well with your sideburns. However, this is just my opinion, and if you think the combination works, then keep doing what you're doing, by all means.
Peace
Thanks for the input. I was just curious what other people thoght about long hair and earrings on guys. My picture was there more to serve as an example, but that's interesting about the earrings not going will with the sideburns. Maybe different earrings will look better. I definitely want both! :)

I think they look a lot better with long hair than short, so go ahead enjoy them, they look cool on you anyway.
Great, thanks! I just put in the bigger earrings, but I need to take some pics.
