Hey man. I read your post waaaaaaay below. I went to Southwest Miami Senior high for a year then transferred to South Miami High until I graduated. You look kind of familiar. I think I have seen you somewhere before. If I am not mistaken, I might have seen you around Citrus Grove. Oh and by the way, I have a grandmother that lives in the Hialeah area. She lives by 103rd street. By the West land mall.
I went to Ponce de Leon Junior High School in the Gables, but I doubt you three Miami guys saw me around. It was in the 1950s!
Bill
We weren't even born yet! Thats great though. You went to what was once one of the greatest schools in the Miami area.
See you around Bill
"ONCE"??? So it's gone downhill, huh. I'm taking it from your comment that it does still exist, surprising I guess since I entered the school 49 years ago this September, and it had old buildings then.
We never called it "Poncie day LEE OWN", by the way, like everywhere else they say that dude's name. We called it "Ponts duh LEE ahn". Wonder if they still do.
Bill
How did you manage to go to school down there? I thought you were from the midwest originally?
Yea, The school is still there. It is still located on S DIXIE HWY / US-1 S. The school has gradually degraded over the years. Heck, The whole city has been gradually degrading. The school has had improvements construction wise. They've added portables, Gyms, New buildings etc.. But the education is poor. They just call it just "Ponce" now a' days. By the way Bill, When was the last time you came to Miami? It is definitely not like it was in the 50's and 60's. This city has become a metropolitan nightmare.
Yeah, we mostly called it that. Notice that I called my post that in the subject. [grin]
I grew up in the Illinois Ozarks but we lived in the Miami area for a few years. When we moved there in 1958 the south Gables and South Miami area were sleepy areas on the outskirts of the metro area. We lived on Old Cutler Road, we had huge really cool banyan trees in our front yard, and across the road was nothing but swamps, and south of where we lived nothing was developed much. We used to hike in the swampy areas to the east of Old Cutler. It was a cool place for kids to get lost from the parents and just goof off.
When Batista was overthown and Castro came to power, the area immediately began to change. A large influx of people unhappy with events down there came into the area and the population began to grow. We actually began to see traffic jams on Dixie Highway, despite its being four lanes (two in each direction).
We sold the Gables house in 1960 and moved to Golden Beach, up in the NE corner of Dade County. Most of the kids there went to a private school in Ft. Lauderdale and I finished up my secondary schooling there. Upon graduation in 1964 I left South Florida never to return except for brief visits. The last one was in 1983.
Yeah, I bet it has changed.
Bill
I saw that school, Pine Crest, got indirect mention on the news tonight by the way. One of the kids there had gone to Iraq by himself when he was 15 and tonight he was on the news having gone to Afghanistan at age 17. He was shown on national TV wearing my high school's T-shirts. I'm sure both the stuffy school administration, as well as his parents, were not pleased!
Bill
Went to Iraq and Afghanistan to do what?
My trusty dictionary refers:
Ponce (Brit. informal) noun 1. a man who lives off a prostitute's earnings 2. an effeminate man
ROFL!
Nah, it's just my junior high school. Named after some foolish old Spanish dude who thought he could get young again by just drinking water.
Bill
Strictly speaking, a ponce is a male housekeeper in a brothel. I think the idea is to have a man do the cooking, cleaning, etc., because a woman would end up servicing clients sooner or later.
Does anyone know, in the interests of science, whether American brothels routinely employ men as housekeepers, or is it purely a British thing?
I got FIU in SW 8th street and I have long hair.
